Vandalism by tourists in Tripura’s Jampui Hills sparks outrage among locals after trees and public property were damaged. Residents urge responsible tourism, cultural respect, and stronger monitoring to protect one of the state’s cleanest and most scenic destinations.
Tension has gripped the Monpui area of Jampui Hills following an incident of vandalism that has triggered widespread anger and concern among local residents. Miscreants allegedly damaged public and private property, cut down trees in local gardens, and vandalized the signboard of the Mizo Convention, raising serious questions about responsible tourism in one of Tripura’s most cherished hill destinations.
Jampui Hills, often described as the cleanest and most picturesque tourist spot in Tripura, is renowned for its lush greenery, panoramic mountain views, orange orchards, and warm hospitality of its indigenous communities. The recent act of vandalism has therefore come as a shock to residents who have long prided themselves on preserving the ecological balance and cultural harmony of the region.
According to locals, unidentified visitors caused deliberate damage to garden trees and community property, sparking fear that such irresponsible behavior could threaten the fragile environment of the hills. The destruction of the Mizo Convention signboard, a symbol of cultural identity and unity, has particularly hurt community sentiments.
Residents have strongly condemned the incident, calling it an unacceptable violation of local values and environmental ethics. Community members emphasized that Jampui Hills has always welcomed tourists with open arms, irrespective of where they come from. However, they stressed that hospitality should not be mistaken for tolerance of reckless or destructive behavior.
“All are welcome in Jampui Hills, which is known as the cleanest place in Tripura,” local residents said in a collective appeal. “But visitors must not litter, harm nature, or destroy public property. Respect our culture, our norms, and our values—this is what makes Jampui Hills special.”
The incident has reignited concerns about unregulated tourism and the lack of adequate monitoring mechanisms in popular hill destinations. Locals fear that repeated acts of vandalism could tarnish the reputation of Jampui Hills, discouraging responsible travelers and undermining years of community-led conservation efforts.
Community leaders have underlined that tourism should go hand in hand with responsibility and respect. They urged visitors to enjoy the natural beauty of the hills without compromising its ecological and cultural integrity. “Come, visit, and have fun responsibly,” leaders said, adding that tourism must benefit both visitors and host communities.
The vandalism has also prompted discussions on the need for stricter surveillance, better enforcement of tourism regulations, and awareness campaigns aimed at educating visitors about sustainable travel practices. Residents believe that installing information boards, deploying local volunteers, and strengthening coordination with authorities could help prevent similar incidents in the future.

Environmental activists have warned that cutting down trees and damaging green spaces in fragile hill ecosystems can have long-term consequences, including soil erosion, biodiversity loss, and degradation of water sources. They argue that even small acts of vandalism can collectively cause irreversible damage if left unchecked.
As tourism continues to grow in Tripura’s hill regions, the incident at Jampui Hills serves as a reminder that protecting natural and cultural heritage requires shared responsibility. Locals hope that swift action by authorities, combined with greater awareness among tourists, will help restore trust and ensure that Jampui Hills remains a symbol of harmony between nature, culture, and tourism.
