National Law University-Agartala Bhoomi Pujan: Tripura Chief Minister Streeses on Strong Legal System

The bhoomi pujan ceremony for the National Law University (NLU) Tripura Campus took place at Narsingarh on Thursday, marking a significant step forward in the development of legal education in the northeastern region of India. The event witnessed the presence of several distinguished dignitaries, including Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court and Chancellor of the University, Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh, along with Justices T. Amarnath Goud, Arindam Lodh, S.D. Purkayastha, and Biswajit Palit. Also in attendance were Secretaries Kiran Gitte and Raval Hemandra Kumar, NLU Tripura Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Yogesh Pratap Singh, and many other prominent figures.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha emphasized the critical role of a strong legal system in upholding democracy and ensuring justice. Reflecting on the journey of the university’s establishment, he recalled that the foundation stone had been laid by the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, in 2022. During that time, he had personally visited the site and witnessed the collective efforts of various individuals in initiating this prestigious institution. He expressed his belief that the establishment of NLU Tripura represents a historic milestone, not just for the state but for the entire region, as it paves the way for excellence in legal education and practice.
Dr. Saha further highlighted that the formation of this university is a testament to the state government’s commitment to promoting quality legal education, fostering research, and shaping policy frameworks. He stressed the need for expanding beyond a single law university by encouraging advanced research initiatives to elevate the institution’s academic standards and enhance public awareness of legal education. He assured the university administration of continuous support in financial, administrative, and policy-related aspects to ensure the institution's growth. He reiterated that as one of the premier centers for legal studies, NLU Tripura would play a pivotal role in producing skilled legal professionals, eminent judges, and influential policymakers, ultimately strengthening the judicial framework of the country.
Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh lauded the establishment of NLU Tripura as a transformational step for the state and emphasized its long-term significance in shaping the legal landscape. He remarked that the university has already made remarkable progress in its early years, as evidenced by its full student occupancy and increasing recognition among parents and aspiring law students. He noted that within a short span of time, the university has gained trust and is on its way to becoming a prominent center for legal skill development in the Northeast.
Justice Singh elaborated on the judiciary’s vital role in fostering legal education and underscored the broader vision for NLU Tripura. He described the institution not just as a university but as a hub for cultivating legal intellect, promoting critical research, and instilling a deeper sense of justice in society. He emphasized that legal education extends beyond law students, as it has far-reaching implications for the overall well-being of society. A well-informed and legally aware community, he argued, is instrumental in building a just and progressive state. He further highlighted the essential role of a solid legal foundation in ensuring social justice and equality, reinforcing the idea that legal education must be accessible and impactful for the larger community.
During the event, Justice Arindam Lodh of the High Court of Tripura made a significant announcement regarding the establishment of an endowment fund of Rs. 8 lakh. This fund is dedicated to organizing lectures in memory of his late father, Apanshu Mohan Lodh, a distinguished lawyer of Tripura and founder Editor of Tripura Times. This initiative aims to enrich the academic and intellectual environment of NLU Tripura by facilitating discussions and knowledge-sharing among students and legal professionals.
The Bhoomi Pujang of the NLU Tripura campus signifies a major step toward strengthening the legal education framework in the state and the broader Northeast region.
