The opposition CPI(M) in Tripura has re-elected Jitendra Chaudhury as the party’s state secretary. This decision was made during the party’s 24th state conference, which spanned three days and resulted in the formation of a 61-member committee for the next three years.
During a press conference at the party headquarters in Melarmath on Friday, former minister Manik Dey announced that politburo member Manik Sarkar had proposed Jitendra Chaudhury’s re-election as secretary, a proposal that was unanimously accepted by the party members.
Dey highlighted that the conclusion of the state conference marked the beginning of an intensified movement by the party on at least nine key issues. These include the privatization of the education sector under the National Education Policy, the rising crime rates, particularly against women, the instigation of communal tension by the BJP and RSS, the demand for adequate assistance to flood-affected farmers and the declaration of last year’s flood as a national disaster, direct funding to the TTAADC, the announcement of village council elections, and the filling of all vacant government posts with transparency.
Re-elected secretary Jitendra Chaudhury stated on Friday that, with a special provision of the party’s constitution, Manik Sarkar, Narayan Kar, and Pabitra Kar, all over 75 years of age, have been inducted as members of the party. According to the party constitution, individuals above 75 years cannot serve as active members.
Chaudhury also mentioned that the 24th state conference had resolved to intensify the movement against the BJP’s rule in Tripura. The mass gathering on January 29 saw a massive turnout from people frustrated with the current government’s misrule. Additionally, the CPI(M) has recently urged the 16th Finance Commission to empower the TTAADC by ensuring direct funding.
