The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of the alleged brutal assault on a woman in Takarjala, Sepahijala district, directing the Tripura DGP to investigate allegations of delayed FIR registration, police lapses, and submit a detailed report within the hearing period.
The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of an alleged brutal assault on a woman in Takarjala under Sepahijala district after reports surfaced claiming delay in police action and serious lapses in the handling of the case. The Commission has directed the Director General of Police (DGP), Tripura, to conduct a thorough inquiry into the allegations and submit a detailed report.
The Commission, headed by Justice Arindam Lodh, initiated proceedings after taking note of a news report published in a local daily on June 23. According to the order, the Commission found the allegations serious enough to warrant intervention on its own, without waiting for a formal complaint from the victim or her family.
As per the allegations cited in the newspaper report, the woman was accused by some local residents of maintaining an extramarital relationship. It was alleged that she was called out of her residence on the pretext of attending a village panchayat meeting. However, instead of a community discussion, she was allegedly attacked by a group of people, including several women.
The allegations further claim that the victim was subjected to extreme physical violence during the assault. The report referred to claims that a bamboo stick was allegedly inserted into her private parts, causing severe injuries. The incident has drawn widespread concern due to the nature of the alleged assault and its implications for human rights and women’s safety.
Following the incident, the injured woman was initially admitted to Bishalgarh Hospital for emergency medical treatment. Due to the seriousness of her injuries, doctors later referred her to the Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital in Agartala. Reports indicate that she underwent surgery while receiving treatment at the tertiary healthcare facility.
The Commission also took note of allegations that, while undergoing treatment in the hospital, the victim had identified some of the individuals allegedly involved in the assault. These claims are expected to form part of the inquiry ordered by the Human Rights Commission.
Another matter highlighted in the Commission’s order relates to allegations that supporters of a political party allegedly threatened members of the victim’s family while they were visiting her in the hospital. The Commission has included these allegations within the scope of the inquiry and has sought clarification from the police regarding the reported intimidation.
Equally significant are allegations that no First Information Report (FIR) had been registered by the Takarjala Police Station even 72 hours after the incident occurred. The reported delay in initiating legal proceedings has raised questions over the police response, prompting the Human Rights Commission to seek a detailed explanation from the state’s top police official.
Describing the matter as a grave incident involving serious allegations of violence and possible administrative lapses, the THRC stated in its order that it had taken suo motu cognisance of the case. A copy of the newspaper report has been forwarded to the Director General of Police with directions to investigate all allegations mentioned in the report.
The DGP has been requested to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the alleged delay in registering an FIR, the conduct of the police, and the allegations of intimidation against the victim’s relatives. The Commission expects a detailed report before the next hearing.

Meanwhile, the case has generated widespread public attention, with demands for a fair investigation, accountability, and justice for the victim.
