England Test captain Ben Stokes is set to return to competitive cricket for Durham in the County Championship against Northamptonshire after being dropped from England’s second Test against New Zealand. Stokes and Gus Atkinson remain under investigation over a nightclub incident, while England awaits clarity ahead of the third Test.

England Test captain Ben Stokes is set to make his return to competitive cricket after being named in Durham’s 15-member squad for their upcoming County Championship fixture against Northamptonshire. The match is scheduled to begin on Friday at Chester-le-Street, offering Stokes an opportunity to regain valuable match practice amid ongoing scrutiny surrounding a recent off-field incident.

Stokes, along with England fast bowler Gus Atkinson, was left out of England’s ongoing second Test against New Zealand at The Oval. The omission came as authorities continued investigations into a nightclub incident in London that occurred following England’s victory in the first Test at Lord’s.

Despite the ongoing inquiries, both players have been cleared to participate in domestic cricket. As a result, Stokes will represent Durham in their County Championship clash, while Atkinson is expected to be included in Surrey’s squad for their match against Glamorgan in Cardiff.

The controversy stems from events that unfolded after England secured a commanding 115-run victory over New Zealand in the opening Test. Stokes and Atkinson reportedly breached the team’s midnight curfew while celebrating the win. They were present at a nightclub where a member of England’s security staff was allegedly struck by a player from Saracens Rugby Club.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the independent Cricket Regulator are continuing their respective investigations into the incident. The uncertainty surrounding the case sparked widespread speculation regarding Stokes’ future in international cricket, with some reports suggesting concerns about a possible retirement.

However, those fears have largely subsided following the all-rounder’s return to training with Durham. The upcoming fixture will mark Stokes’ third County Championship appearance of the season, indicating his continued commitment to the game while awaiting the outcome of the investigations.

In Stokes’ absence, senior batter Joe Root has assumed leadership responsibilities for England’s Test side on a match-by-match basis. England’s selectors and management now face a crucial decision ahead of the third Test against New Zealand, which is scheduled to begin next Thursday at Trent Bridge.

With the third Test fast approaching, England officials are expected to seek clarity on the status and availability of both Stokes and Atkinson by Monday. Their potential return could provide a significant boost to the national side as it looks to maintain momentum in the Test series.
