State Govt Planning Rs 32 Cr Tourism Project in Ludhua Tea Estate.Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury Explores Potential of Lodhua Tea Estate in Sabroom

In a renewed push to put Tripura on India’s tourism map, State Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury on Sunday visited the scenic Lodhua Tea Estate in South Tripura’s Sabroom sub-division, identifying the century-old tea garden as a potential eco-tourism destination.

The state government is planning to go ahead with Rs 32 crore full-fledged eco-tourism hub in the tea garden.

The visit marked the beginning of what officials are calling a major new chapter in Tripura’s tourism journey.

Surrounded by lush green hills and forests, the Lodhua Tea Estate—nestled close to the Bangladesh border—is poised to become a signature attraction in the state’s expanding tourism portfolio. The minister, accompanied by a team of top officials and local dignitaries, was visibly impressed by the natural beauty, tranquil atmosphere, and untapped potential of the region.

Among those who joined the minister during the inspection were Tourism Director Prashant Badal Negi, Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Sabroom Shivjyoti Dutta, Assistant Block Development Officer of Rupaichari Block Titu Debbarma, as well as prominent local leaders including former Sabroom MLA Shankar Roy, social workers Shantipriya Bhowmik, and Tapas Lodh.

Speaking to reporters after his visit, Minister Chowdhury said, “Our goal is to identify every tourism-worthy location in Tripura and elevate them to national prominence. Lodhua Tea Estate is a shining example of how nature and heritage can come together to create a unique destination. With the right planning, Sabroom could rival even Darjeeling in terms of experience.”

A Vision for Sustainable Development

The Tripura government has outlined a comprehensive plan to transform the Lodhua Tea Estate into a full-fledged eco-tourism hub. The ₹32 crore project will include the development of a boating-friendly lake, a scenic rope bridge, shaded gazebos, walking trails through natural landscapes, play areas for children, and open spaces for cultural and leisure activities. Additionally, tourists will have access to local handcrafts and traditional Tripuri cuisine through dedicated stalls.

Officials confirmed that project implementation will begin soon, with priority on environmental sustainability and local community involvement. Once operational, the project is expected to boost employment in the region and promote Tripura’s heritage beyond the traditional tourism circuits.

“Tourism is not just about infrastructure—it’s about connecting people to place and culture,” said Tourism Director Prashant Badal Negi. “Lodhua Tea Estate has the potential to offer an immersive experience that blends relaxation with cultural richness.”

A Background on Tripura’s Tourism Push

Over the past few years especially under the incumbent Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, Tripura has intensified efforts to diversify its tourism offerings. From the historic Ujjayanta Palace in Agartala to the ancient rock carvings of Unakoti, the state has aimed to promote its natural, cultural, and archaeological wealth. Key initiatives have included the development of eco-parks, heritage trails, and cross-border tourism opportunities with Bangladesh.

The state government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, has also focused on infrastructure upgrades—improving roads, expanding digital connectivity, and modernizing hospitality services. The opening of the Maitri Setu bridge connecting Sabroom to Bangladesh’s Ramgarh has further strengthened Tripura’s appeal as a gateway for international travelers.

The Lodhua Tea Estate initiative is being seen as part of this broader strategy to decentralize tourism and attract footfall to less-explored destinations. Observers say that turning Sabroom into a vibrant tourism zone could also shift socio-economic dynamics in the region, reducing migration and generating local revenue.

The Road Ahead

If the project proceeds as planned, Sabroom could soon be home to one of Tripura’s most iconic tourism destinations. The natural solitude of Lodhua, enhanced with curated experiences and eco-friendly infrastructure, is likely to appeal to both domestic and international tourists seeking alternatives to more crowded hill stations.

Minister Chowdhury concluded his visit with optimism: “Sabroom will no longer be known just as a border town—it will be remembered as a haven of peace, beauty, and culture. The dream is big, but the foundation has been laid.”

As Tripura continues to blend tradition with modernity, Lodhua Tea Estate could well become a symbol of the state’s new tourism frontier—one steeped in nature, history, and community pride.
