The BJP’s internal election for a new national president is expected to take place after the Vice Presidential polls. With internal elections nearly completed in most states, sources say the final phase is underway, though delays may occur due to pending appointments in key states like UP, Bengal, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is likely to hold its national presidential election only after the upcoming Vice Presidential polls, according to senior party insiders. The Election Commission of India recently announced the schedule for the Vice President election, intensifying speculations in political circles regarding the timeline of the BJP’s crucial internal leadership transition.
While the BJP has not formally announced a date for the national presidential election, sources suggest that the process is nearing completion. A senior BJP leader, speaking to IANS on the condition of anonymity, confirmed that the internal groundwork for electing the new national president is already at its final stage.
“The process to elect the party’s new national president is ongoing, and we are at the last stage of this process,” the leader said. “There’s no official delay, but it’s true that some internal state elections are yet to be completed.”
Responding to whether the Vice Presidential poll announcement by the Election Commission would delay the party’s presidential elections, the leader added, “We have already conducted internal elections in 26 states and Union Territories. The process is now focused on the remaining key states—Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat—which are all in the final stages.”
Another senior BJP leader, who also chose to remain unnamed, hinted at a tentative deadline: “There are possibilities that new state presidents in Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Gujarat will be elected by August 12. That’s the last day of the current Monsoon Session of Parliament.”
He also noted, “If this timeline slips, then it might take a couple more weeks to complete the process in those states.”
The party’s current national president, J.P. Nadda, completed his extended tenure following the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Though his leadership had initially been extended due to electoral priorities and organizational restructuring, the delay in conducting state-level elections and gaining internal approval—reportedly including from the RSS—has prolonged the selection process for his successor.
Sources indicate that the BJP’s top brass has been meticulously planning this leadership transition. Factors such as caste alignment, regional representation, and organizational balance are reportedly under serious consideration to ensure the party’s future leadership resonates with public sentiment across India.
Party insiders suggest that getting a green signal from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), which plays a crucial ideological and strategic role in BJP affairs, has also contributed to the slow progress. Aligning internal leadership roles with the party’s electoral strategy for upcoming state elections may have further influenced the timing.
Notably, internal appointments in politically sensitive and electorally significant states like Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal are seen as key to the party’s long-term strategy. BJP sources emphasized that these appointments are not mere formalities, but calculated moves to position the party favorably ahead of future political contests.
Although BJP has maintained public silence on the exact date for presidential elections, the political mood within the party and among observers suggests that the new president may not be declared until after the Vice President poll is concluded.

The Vice Presidential election schedule, now officially announced by the Election Commission, is being seen as the immediate priority for the party’s parliamentary strategy team. Once that is over, BJP is expected to announce the full timeline for the transition of its national leadership.
With growing political attention and internal deliberations reaching their peak, the BJP’s presidential election is set to become a defining moment in the party’s organizational evolution post-2024.
