A 48-year-old carpenter from Ganda Twisa has been missing for 37 days, triggering rising tension and criticism of police inaction. Rights groups and political leaders visit the distressed family as concerns grow over ethnic fault-lines in the volatile region.

The disappearance of a 48-year-old carpenter from 12 Ghat village in Ganda Twisa has left the region on edge, reviving underlying tensions in an area long scarred by ethnic conflicts. More than 37 days have passed since Surja Mohan Das, the only earning member of his family, went missing under mysterious circumstances on October 9, 2025, leaving behind a helpless household struggling for survival and answers.

According to family members, Das had left home that morning in search of daily wage work. Despite assuring his wife and children that he would return in the evening, he never came back. When repeated attempts to contact him failed, the family approached the local police station, which subsequently registered an FIR. However, the investigation has produced no significant leads, deepening the family’s anguish.

Several rights activists, social workers, and local political functionaries have visited the family over the past few weeks, expressing concern over the pace and direction of the investigation. The poverty-stricken family has openly voiced its disappointment, alleging that the police have been unable to establish any breakthrough in what they describe as a “simple missing case,” even after more than a month. Their frustration highlights a larger issue: mistrust in law enforcement in an already sensitive region.

Local sources offered a brief account of the last known movements of the missing man. On the morning of October 9, Das reportedly visited the nearby Chakma slum with a few acquaintances. Witnesses claimed the group consumed country-made liquor before parting ways for their respective work commitments. When investigators later approached the slum, some residents stated that Das was seen heading toward a particular direction on foot. Unfortunately, the trail ends there. No further clues have emerged, leaving the police with a dead end and the family with growing despair.

Unverified local narratives suggest that the disappearance has rekindled concerns of ethnic fault-lines in Ganda Twisa, a region that has experienced one of the most turbulent phases of inter-community violence in recent decades. Though the area has largely returned to normalcy, residents say the psychological wounds remain fresh, and any incident involving members of different communities instantly raises suspicion and anxiety.

Political intervention has added a new dimension to the case. A delegation of Congress leaders, led by Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) President Asish Kumar Saha, visited the residence of the missing man on Wednesday. They interacted with the family, assured them of support, and criticized the slow progress of the investigation.

Speaking to the media after the visit, Saha strongly condemned the lack of results from the ongoing probe. He said, “Over a month has passed, yet the police remain clueless about his whereabouts. From what we understand, Surja Mohan Das was a skilled daily wage worker who never had disputes with anyone. If the police cannot safeguard the rights of a simple and innocent man, it is extremely unfortunate.”

He further added, “We are at a loss for words while consoling the distressed family. This is not just a failure of policing but a failure of accountability. We will certainly take up this matter with higher authorities in the coming days.”

Meanwhile, residents of nearby villages expressed fear that the unresolved disappearance may escalate tensions, especially if a clear explanation is not provided soon. A few community representatives have urged the administration to deploy more investigative resources, including specialized search teams, and increase coordination with local leaders.

The family of Surja Mohan Das continues to wait anxiously, clinging to the faint hope that he may return or that authorities may find a breakthrough. His disappearance has not only robbed them of their sole breadwinner but has also exposed the fragility of peace in a region where trust remains fragile and tensions simmer just beneath the surface.

As days turn into weeks, the demand for justice grows louder — both for the missing carpenter and for a community seeking reassurance from the law enforcement machinery meant to protect them.
