PM Narendra Modi praises Tripura bamboo craft in Mann Ki Baat, highlighting artisans’ innovation, rising demand in metro markets, and sustainable livelihoods. Recognition boosts rural economy, women empowerment, and global export potential of Northeast India’s eco-friendly bamboo industry.

A quiet craft tradition from the Northeast found a powerful national voice on Sunday as Narendra Modi spotlighted Tripura’s bamboo artisans during the 133rd episode of Mann Ki Baat. The Prime Minister’s remarks not only celebrated the intricate craftsmanship of the state but also underscored the growing market demand for eco-friendly bamboo products across India’s major cities.

During the broadcast, Modi praised the skill and innovation of local artisans, particularly highlighting the contributions of Bijoy Sutradhar from Gomati district and Pradip Chakraborty from South Tripura. Both craftsmen have successfully blended traditional knowledge with modern technology, enabling them to improve both the quality and scale of their production.

Their stories represent a broader shift in the bamboo sector, especially after the landmark Indian Forest Act Amendment 2017, which reclassified bamboo as grass rather than a tree. This policy change significantly eased restrictions on harvesting, transportation, and commercial use, unlocking new opportunities for artisans and entrepreneurs across the Northeast.

Highlighting the environmental and economic value of bamboo, the Prime Minister urged citizens to support artisans by purchasing locally made products. He noted that items crafted in Tripura are increasingly finding buyers in metropolitan hubs like Mumbai and Delhi, signaling a shift toward sustainable consumption patterns. Modi further encouraged artisans to explore global markets, positioning bamboo craft as a symbol of India’s cultural richness and self-reliance.

“Tripura’s bamboo craft reflects our tradition and offers a sustainable livelihood. It deserves global recognition,” Modi said, emphasizing the need to elevate indigenous industries to the international stage.

The recognition has sparked enthusiasm across Tripura, where the bamboo sector plays a vital role in rural employment. State-backed initiatives such as the Tripura Bamboo Mission have been instrumental in supporting artisans through training, machinery, and financial assistance.

Among those deeply moved by the acknowledgment is entrepreneur Pradip Chakraborty, who runs a community production centre in East Charakbai village under the Shantir Bazar subdivision. Established in 2008, the 1,500-square-foot facility has become a hub of local economic activity, currently employing 12 workers—all women.

Speaking after the broadcast, Chakraborty expressed gratitude and pride. He described the mention as a moment of immense recognition, not only for his enterprise but for countless small-scale entrepreneurs working in rural India. He credited the Tripura Bamboo Mission for providing machinery and technical support, as well as financial backing through a loan from Punjab National Bank, which helped expand operations.

The entrepreneur emphasized that his unit’s workforce highlights the role of cottage industries in advancing women’s empowerment and financial independence. Even on holidays, workers continue production to meet growing demand, reflecting both dedication and market expansion.

Chakraborty noted that such recognition instills confidence among grassroots entrepreneurs to dream bigger and scale their ventures. His success story illustrates how targeted policy support, combined with local innovation, can transform traditional crafts into viable modern industries.

Beyond Tripura, the Prime Minister’s address also covered broader national themes, including preparations for the upcoming census, advancements in nuclear energy, and reflections on the teachings of Gautama Buddha ahead of Buddha Purnima. However, it was the focus on bamboo craftsmanship that resonated most strongly in the Northeast.

Experts believe that such national-level recognition could accelerate investment, boost exports, and enhance branding for bamboo-based products from Tripura. The state government is expected to leverage this momentum to further strengthen infrastructure, promote skill development, and expand market linkages.

As India continues to emphasize sustainability and local manufacturing, Tripura’s bamboo industry stands at a promising crossroads—rooted in tradition yet evolving with innovation, and now firmly placed on the national and potentially global stage.
