Slum dwellers in Agartala protest eviction notices without rehabilitation, blocking roads in Abhoynagar. Residents demand relocation plans amid Smart City projects, raising concerns over displacement, livelihoods, and government response to urban development-driven evictions.

Tension escalated in a densely populated locality of Agartala on Sunday after residents of Ujan Abhoynagar staged a road blockade to protest eviction notices issued by the local administration. The demonstration brought traffic to a halt for a considerable period, drawing the attention of authorities and highlighting growing concerns over displacement without rehabilitation.

According to local residents, the eviction notices were served without any prior consultation or a clear rehabilitation plan for affected families. Protesters argued that many households in the area have been living there for decades and would face severe hardship if forced to vacate without alternative housing arrangements. The sudden move, they claimed, has left hundreds of families uncertain about their future.

Voicing their concerns, several residents emphasized that they were not opposed to development initiatives but demanded humane and structured relocation measures. “We are not against development, but we cannot be left homeless. There must be a proper plan before eviction,” one protester said during the agitation.

The blockade significantly disrupted vehicular movement in the Abhoynagar area, causing inconvenience to commuters and prompting intervention from local authorities. Police and administrative officials reached the spot to assess the situation and engage with the protesters. Officials stated that the situation was under control and efforts were being made to restore normalcy.

Residents also pointed out that the eviction could have serious economic implications. Many families rely on local employment opportunities and small businesses within the area for their daily livelihood. Displacement without proper resettlement, they argued, would not only uproot them socially but also push them into financial instability.

Despite approaching local representatives and corporators for support, residents claimed that no concrete assurance had been provided until the protest forced attention to the issue. The demonstrators warned that the agitation could intensify if their demands for rehabilitation and proper planning are not addressed promptly.

The eviction notices are believed to be part of ongoing urban development initiatives, including projects linked to the Smart City programme. However, the lack of clarity regarding relocation has sparked widespread concern among the affected population.

The protest was eventually called off after assurances from state government representatives that the concerns of residents would be reviewed. Authorities indicated that discussions would be held to find a balanced solution that aligns development goals with humanitarian considerations.
