PM Modi warns of serious economic, security, and humanitarian challenges for India due to the escalating West Asia conflict, highlighting risks to trade routes, energy supplies, and millions of Indians living in Gulf countries.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored the growing challenges India faces due to the escalating conflict in West Asia. He emphasized that the crisis, now stretching beyond three weeks, is having far-reaching consequences on global stability, trade flows, and the safety of Indian nationals abroad.
Speaking during a detailed discussion on the ongoing geopolitical tensions, the Prime Minister described the situation as “worrisome” and noted that the impact is already being felt across multiple sectors. He referred to earlier briefings by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, which outlined the seriousness of the situation.
Global Crisis, Local Impact
PM Modi stressed that the West Asia conflict is no longer a regional issue but a global concern affecting economies and everyday lives. “The adverse impact is being felt on the global economy and on people’s lives,” he said, adding that there is increasing international pressure for a swift resolution.
India, due to its strategic and economic ties with the region, finds itself particularly vulnerable. The Prime Minister highlighted that the challenges emerging from the crisis are not limited to one domain but span economic, national security, and humanitarian concerns.
Trade Routes and Energy Security at Risk
A major concern outlined by the Prime Minister is the disruption of critical trade routes. West Asia serves as a key corridor for India’s international trade, especially for energy imports. “A large part of our crude oil and gas requirements is met by this region,” he stated, pointing to the potential risks to India’s energy security.
Any prolonged instability in the region could lead to fluctuations in oil prices, supply chain disruptions, and increased costs for industries and consumers alike. Analysts warn that such developments could also impact inflation and economic growth in India.
Safety of Indians Abroad
One of the most pressing issues raised during the address was the safety of Indian nationals living and working in Gulf countries. According to the Prime Minister, approximately one crore Indians reside in the region, contributing significantly to both the local economies and India’s remittance inflows.
“The number of Indian crew members on commercial ships in these waters is also very high,” he noted, highlighting the risks faced by maritime workers amid rising tensions in key shipping lanes.
Government’s Response and Diplomatic Efforts
Assuring the nation, PM Modi said the government has taken proactive steps to ensure the safety and welfare of Indians in the conflict-affected areas. He revealed that he personally held two rounds of telephonic conversations with the heads of state of several West Asian countries.
“All of them have assured full safety for Indians,” he said, emphasizing India’s strong diplomatic engagement. Indian missions in the region have been placed on high alert and are actively assisting citizens, whether workers, professionals, or tourists.
Casualties and Humanitarian Support
The Prime Minister also acknowledged the human cost of the conflict, confirming that some Indian nationals have lost their lives while others have been injured. “In such difficult times, families are being provided with necessary support,” he stated.
He added that the injured are receiving the best possible medical treatment and that the government is extending all forms of assistance to affected families. The Indian embassies and consulates are working round the clock to address concerns and provide relief.
India’s Priority: Citizen Safety
Reiterating the government’s commitment, PM Modi said, “In any crisis situation, the safety and security of Indians in the country and abroad has always been our top priority.” He assured that India will continue to monitor the situation closely and take all necessary measures to safeguard its citizens and national interests.
Call for Peace
Concluding his address, the Prime Minister echoed global calls for de-escalation and dialogue. He stressed that a peaceful resolution is essential not only for regional stability but also for the global economy and humanitarian well-being.
