An inconclusive meeting was held on Thursday in Manipur amid rising resentment among some of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislators against Chief Minister N. Biren Singh. This meeting was held after four MLAs resigned from their government posts in protest against the Chief Minister.
The meeting was not officially disclosed, but sources revealed that it ended without any concrete resolution. A BJP leader said that Sambit Patra, the party’s northeast coordinator and national spokesperson, who was present at the meeting, would report to the central leaders about the meeting, and then the high command would make a decision.
Between April 13 and April 24, four MLAs, namely Thokchom Radheysham, Karam Shyam, Raghumani Singh, and Paonam Brojen Singh, resigned from their government posts. These MLAs respectively held the positions of the Chief Minister’s advisor, Chairman of the Manipur State Tourism Development Corporation, the Manipur Renewable Energy Development Agency, and the Manipur Development Society. The four BJP legislators stated that they were not given due responsibility, funds, and authority to function in their posts.
Although Biren Singh claimed earlier this week that there are no differences of opinion and resentment among the legislators, the resignation of these four MLAs has highlighted the growing discontent among some BJP legislators against the Chief Minister.
After the inconclusive meeting on Thursday, Biren Singh tweeted that the meeting focused on the preparations for the 100th edition of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Mann ki Baat, which will be broadcast worldwide on April 30. He appealed to everyone to tune in to the program on Sunday at 11 a.m.
The meeting was attended by Chief Minister Biren Singh, Sambit Patra, Manipur state BJP President A. Sharda Devi, and senior state party leaders. The party’s high command is expected to make a decision after Sambit Patra reports to them about the meeting.
