Erstwhile Royal retreat and later Raj Bhawan majestic Pushpabanta Palace will now be converted into a national level Museum and Cultural Centre. Tourism Minster Pranajit Singh Roy in his social media handles said Pushpabanta Palace after its conversion to Museum and Cultural Centre would showcase the rich heritage of all the North Eastern States, South East Asian fine Arts, contemporary photography along with National and International Archives. It would be fully climate controlled and CCTV monitored. The government already sanctioned Rs. 40.13 crore for development of the iconic palace as Maharaja Birendra Kishore Manikya Museum and Cultural Centre.
Built in 1917 by Maharaja Birendra Kishore Manikya Debbarman- father of Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur – 17 years after Ujjayanta Palace- on a sprawling area near the Malancha Niwas Pushpabanta Palace stood apart for its grandeur and appeal. It is also a place where
Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore during his visit to Tripura had spent night. The palace built with Greco-Roman architecture was later turned into Governor House. It house the Governors of the state till April 2018- when the new Governor House was built in Capital CXomplex.
The state-of-the-art museum would have digital components making it one among the few in the country with realistic digital experiences, the Tourism minister wrote.
“Our Govt is committed for preserving the rich cultural heritage and the immense contribution of the royal dynasty of TRIPURA,” Roy commented and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb for the initiative and sanctioning the fund.
