Kerala election 2026 heats up as Pinarayi Vijayan rejects CPI(M)-BJP deal claims, slams Congress narrative, and asserts BJP will fail to win seats. UDF intensifies campaign strategy amid rising political tensions ahead of April 9 polls.
The political battleground in Kerala has witnessed a sharp escalation as Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan firmly rejected allegations of a covert understanding between the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. Labeling the accusations as politically motivated, Vijayan asserted that the narrative stems from the opposition’s “fear of defeat.”
With campaigning intensifying for the April 9 polls, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) has strategically positioned the alleged CPI(M)-BJP nexus at the centre of its electoral messaging. The move is widely seen as an attempt to consolidate minority votes and prevent any shift toward the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF).
Vijayan Dismisses Allegations as “Baseless”
Addressing the media on Monday, Vijayan categorically denied any form of understanding with the BJP. He reiterated that the saffron party has little electoral relevance in Kerala and predicted that it would fail to secure even a single seat in the Assembly.
“The Congress is spreading false propaganda due to its fear of losing the election,” Vijayan said, emphasizing that the Left remains ideologically opposed to the BJP and its policies.
He also turned the tables on the Congress, alleging that it has historically engaged in indirect arrangements with the BJP. Vijayan referred to the controversial “Co-Lee-Bee” political equation — a term used in Kerala politics to suggest an understanding between Congress, the Indian Union Muslim League, and BJP elements in select constituencies.
UDF Pushes ‘Deal’ Narrative
On the other hand, the UDF has doubled down on its claims, arguing that the CPI(M) is deliberately weakening its electoral prospects in certain constituencies to facilitate BJP’s entry into the state’s political landscape. According to Congress leaders, this alleged strategy could divide secular votes and alter the electoral arithmetic.
The opposition has been actively promoting this narrative at rallies and campaign events, portraying it as a threat to Kerala’s secular fabric. Political observers note that this is a continuation of the “CPI(M)-BJP nexus” argument previously raised by senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, now sharpened in the run-up to the election.
War of Words Intensifies
The exchange of accusations has triggered a broader war of words between the two major fronts. CPI(M) state secretary M. V. Govindan launched a counterattack on Leader of the Opposition V. D. Satheesan, accusing him of spreading misinformation to cover up internal dissent within the UDF.
Govindan claimed that the Congress-led alliance is struggling with internal divisions and is resorting to “baseless allegations” to divert public attention. He further insisted that the LDF’s governance record and welfare initiatives would secure it a decisive mandate.
BJP Factor and Electoral Stakes
Despite its limited electoral success in Kerala, the BJP continues to be a significant talking point in the campaign discourse. Vijayan acknowledged that while the party has seen marginal growth in vote share over the years, it has consistently failed to convert that into Assembly seats.
“The BJP’s presence in Kerala remains minimal. Their vote share does not translate into electoral victories,” Vijayan said, expressing confidence in the LDF’s electoral strength.
The BJP, however, has been working to expand its base in the state, focusing on grassroots mobilization and targeted campaigning in select constituencies.
High-Stakes Election Ahead
As the campaign gathers momentum, the alleged CPI(M)-BJP “deal” has emerged as a central theme shaping voter perception. Both the LDF and UDF are aggressively pushing their narratives, seeking to influence the electorate in a tightly contested political environment.
Vijayan expressed confidence that the LDF would return to power for a historic third consecutive term, dismissing any notion of anti-incumbency. He highlighted the government’s development initiatives and social welfare programs as key factors that would resonate with voters.
Meanwhile, the Congress remains hopeful that its campaign strategy will strike a chord, particularly among minority communities and undecided voters.
Decisive Narrative Battle
Political analysts believe that the effectiveness of the competing narratives could play a decisive role in determining the outcome of the 2026 Assembly elections. While the UDF aims to raise doubts about the LDF’s ideological consistency, the CPI(M) is focusing on governance and stability.
