Karnataka’s cabinet reshuffle debate has intensified as Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar heads to Delhi amid growing lobbying by ministers and MLAs seeking cabinet berths. Senior Congress leaders are expected to discuss portfolio allocations, cabinet expansion, and internal dissatisfaction as the party high command prepares a final decision.
Political activity within the Karnataka Congress government has intensified as discussions surrounding the much-anticipated cabinet reshuffle continue to dominate the state’s political landscape. Senior ministers, legislators, and ministerial aspirants have increased lobbying efforts in New Delhi, seeking cabinet berths and favorable portfolio allocations ahead of a possible second phase of cabinet expansion.
The latest developments come as Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar is scheduled to travel to New Delhi on Wednesday, where he is expected to hold a series of important meetings with senior Congress leadership. His visit has attracted considerable political attention, with speculation growing over potential cabinet changes and the redistribution of portfolios within the state government.
Among those already in Delhi is Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda, who is reportedly seeking the inclusion of key urban development agencies such as the Bengaluru Development Authority (BDA) and the Bengaluru Metropolitan Region Development Authority (BMRDA) under his department. Sources indicate that Gowda has been actively presenting his case before party leaders.
Accompanying him is MLA Rizwan Arshad, who is also believed to be among the contenders hoping to secure a ministerial position if the cabinet is expanded. Their presence in the national capital reflects the increasing competition among Congress leaders as discussions regarding cabinet appointments gather momentum.
Several other legislators and senior Congress leaders, including Ajay Singh and Srinivas Mane, have also reportedly travelled to Delhi. Their objective is to strengthen their claims for inclusion in the state cabinet as the party leadership evaluates possible appointments and portfolio adjustments.
Chief Minister Shivakumar is expected to leave for Delhi at 9:30 a.m. and is likely to meet senior Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra during his visit. Political observers view these meetings as significant, particularly because they come amid growing demands for cabinet expansion and reports of dissatisfaction among some senior ministers regarding their existing responsibilities.
According to party sources, Shivakumar’s visit will also serve as an opportunity to express gratitude to the Congress leadership following his appointment as Chief Minister. It will be his first official visit to Delhi since assuming office, adding further importance to the trip.
Apart from political discussions, Shivakumar is scheduled to attend the 11th Governing Council Meeting of NITI Aayog on June 11. However, sources suggest that cabinet-related matters are expected to remain high on the agenda during his interactions with the Congress high command.
Meanwhile, concerns over portfolio allocations continue to emerge from within the state government. Food and Civil Supplies Minister K.H. Muniyappa recently indicated that he has communicated his preferences regarding departmental responsibilities to the party leadership.
Muniyappa emphasized his commitment to party discipline and stated that he would accept any decision taken by the Congress high command. He expressed a desire to hold a portfolio that would allow him to serve economically weaker sections and underprivileged communities more effectively.
“I will abide by the high command’s decision. I have requested a portfolio through which I can serve the poor. The leadership is aware of my seniority and will take an appropriate decision,” Muniyappa said.
Former minister K.N. Rajanna also weighed in on the ongoing discussions, noting that differences of opinion among senior leaders are common in politics. He expressed confidence that disagreements related to portfolio allocation would eventually be resolved through dialogue and consultation.
Rajanna further suggested that Muniyappa had shown interest in the Social Welfare portfolio, highlighting the ongoing negotiations over departmental responsibilities within the government.
Medical Education and Skill Development Minister Sharan Prakash Patil also addressed the issue, stating that portfolio allocations are determined through consultations between the Chief Minister and the Congress high command. He expressed confidence that the concerns raised by individual leaders would be addressed through the party’s internal decision-making process.
As lobbying efforts intensify in New Delhi, the Congress leadership faces the challenge of balancing regional representation, seniority, administrative requirements, and political aspirations. The second phase of cabinet expansion is now being closely watched by party workers, legislators, and political observers alike.
