Kalyanpur faces a 12-hour blackout after light rain damages fragile power infrastructure, exposing manpower shortages, unpaid contractors, and repeated system failures, leaving residents without electricity, water supply, and essential services amid growing public anger.
A sudden collapse of the power distribution system left large parts of Kalyanpur without electricity for more than 12 hours, turning what should have been a festive period into a prolonged struggle for residents. The disruption followed a brief spell of light rain accompanied by mild winds late Wednesday night, exposing critical vulnerabilities in the region’s electricity infrastructure.
The outage began around 11 PM and extended well into Thursday afternoon, affecting households, businesses, and essential services. Residents reported that even minimal weather disturbances have repeatedly triggered similar failures, raising serious concerns about the resilience of the local power network.
According to officials, the situation is aggravated by an acute shortage of manpower. Currently, only six staff members are tasked with maintaining the entire electricity distribution system in Kalyanpur, a number experts describe as grossly insufficient. Senior manager Manindra Debbarma confirmed that while the 33 KV feeder line connecting Teliamura’s Gamaibari to Kalyanpur was successfully restored, the five major 11 KV distribution feeders—Ampura, West Ghilatali, Kamalnagar, Kalyanpur, and Hospital—remained non-functional for hours.
Initial assessments revealed that falling trees, bamboo, and broken branches during the rainstorm caused extensive damage to overhead power lines. In several locations, conductors snapped completely, complicating restoration efforts. Officials admitted that repairing widespread damage under such limited staffing conditions presents a major operational challenge.
The crisis has been further intensified by the withdrawal of contractor agencies from repair work. Due to pending payments, contractors have reportedly refused to participate in maintenance and emergency restoration activities. This has left the electricity department to manage the entire situation independently, significantly slowing down recovery operations.
The prolonged blackout had a cascading effect on daily life. Water supply systems were disrupted, healthcare services faced operational difficulties, and small businesses suffered financial losses. Many residents expressed frustration over the recurring nature of such outages, noting that similar incidents occur almost every year during the monsoon season—or even after minor weather changes.
Public anger has grown steadily, with locals demanding both immediate corrective measures and long-term infrastructure upgrades. Citizens argue that without urgent investment in modernizing the power grid, increasing manpower, and ensuring contractor accountability, Kalyanpur will continue to experience severe disruptions.
