Israel Launches First Phase of Gaza City Ground Offensive Amid Global Concerns and Ceasefire Push

Must Read

The Israeli military announced that it has started the first steps of a planned ground offensive to capture and control Gaza City. Troops are already operating on the outskirts, specifically in the Zeitoun and Jabalia areas, to prepare for a larger attack. Israel’s Defence Minister, Israel Katz, approved the plan yesterday, which will be reviewed by Israel’s security cabinet later this week. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) said in a statement that to support the operation, Israel is calling up 60,000 reservists, allowing active-duty soldiers to join the mission.

Israel said their goal is to weaken Hamas further by destroying its military infrastructure and separating the group from Gaza’s population. An Israeli military spokesperson said Hamas is battered and bruised after nearly two years of war. However, the offensive has drawn criticism from many international allies. French President Emmanuel Macron warned it could lead to disaster and regional instability.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) also raised concern over the situation in Gaza. The group warned that further combat would worsen conditions for civilians and put the remaining 50 hostages at greater risk. The ICRC called for an immediate ceasefire and better access to humanitarian aid, warning of irreversible consequences for Gaza’s 2.1 million people.

Meanwhile, Qatar and Egypt have proposed a new ceasefire deal involving a 60-day truce and the release of about half of the hostages. Hamas says it agreed to the plan, but Israel has not yet responded formally. Israeli officials say they want a full agreement that includes the release of all hostages.
