Dewald Brevis lit up IPL 2025 with a 23-ball 57 for CSK against Gujarat Titans. Compared to AB de Villiers, Brevis says he wants to be his own player. CSK won by 83 runs despite finishing last, with Noor Ahmad claiming the Purple Cap with 24 wickets.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ended their disappointing IPL 2025 campaign on a high note with a commanding 83-run win over Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Narendra Modi Stadium. The star of the night was young South African batter Dewald Brevis, who smashed a sensational 57 off just 23 balls — his second fifty of the season — earning him the Player of the Match award.
Brevis’ explosive innings powered CSK to a formidable total of 230, which proved far too much for the table-toppers. Despite CSK finishing at the bottom of the table, Brevis offered fans a glimpse of what the future could hold for the franchise.
Speaking at the post-match presentation, Brevis acknowledged the frequent comparisons to legendary South African cricketer AB de Villiers. While he admitted it was an honour to be likened to one of the IPL’s most iconic batters, Brevis made it clear that he wants to forge his own identity.
“I am happy, I am enjoying the game, having fun out there. I have been the kid who has always enjoyed the moment while playing. I kept telling my mind, ‘it’s cool, not warm (conditions)’,” said Brevis. “I needed to play an innings like that, very grateful for it. I need to keep playing, that’s what everyone has told me. AB is someone I look up to; he has helped improve my game, but I want to be my own player. It’s an honour to be compared to AB de Villiers.”
Despite joining the CSK squad late as a replacement for Gurjapneet Singh, Brevis made a significant impact, scoring 225 runs in six matches at a blistering strike rate of 180. His performance hints at a promising future, not just for CSK, but also for South African cricket.
While Brevis lit up the match with the bat, Afghan spinner Noor Ahmad shone with the ball, reclaiming the Purple Cap after taking three wickets and finishing the season with 24 scalps. His bowling dismantled GT’s middle and lower order, ensuring a massive win for CSK.
Reflecting on the season, Noor admitted it was a tough run for the team, but expressed optimism for the future. “Great way to finish the tournament. We did not have a good season, but it was good to end on a high note. Cricket has its ups and downs. Hopefully, we will come back stronger,” he said.
Though CSK ends IPL 2025 at the bottom of the table, performances like Brevis’ provide hope for a better campaign next year. The team may have struggled, but their young stars are beginning to shine.
