The Ministry of Home Affairs and Central Board of Indirect Tax and Customs have given the go ahead for the ambitious extension of the proposed 40-km Sonamura- Daudkandi Protocol Route from Srimantapur in Sonamura to Maharani in Udaipur. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways assigned M/s Coastal Consolidated Structures Pvt. Limited of Vijayawada to build a permanent jetty at Sonamura. The project cost stands at Rs. 6.91 crore. The PWD- Water Resouerces and Tourism department will also dredge and construct nine floating jetties at the total cost of Rs. 24.52 crore
It was in May 2022 that the Sonamura- Daudkandi stretch of Gomti river was declared an international Indi-Bangla Protocol Route.
Sandeep R. Rathod, special secretary to the Transport department said, the state government has also proposed development of international waterways using the Feni river and establishing connectivity with Chittagong Port in Bangladesh. A proposal in this regard has already been sent to the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways and in all likelihood the project will also get the approval of the union government. The secretary has said that the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) has already conducted an Automated Hydrographic Survey to study the feasibility of the proposed waterway and to find out whether it will be suitable for regular vessels movements..
Rathod has said, a plan is also in the pipeline to connect Tripura with Kaladan Multimodal Transit Project via Cox’s Bazar, Chittagong and Ashuganj ports in Bangladesh and Kolkata through Sittwe and Paletwa.
These are ambitious multinational/ trinational projects were thought of keeping in mind the Act East police of the Union government as well as a part of initiatives that aim at making Tripura as the gateway of South-East Asia..
Rathod has said the construction of a special economic zone, an integrated check-post and a Rail Yard is going on in full swing.
Apart from that the Special secretary has said, the state’s second Multimodal Logistics Hub will also be soon developed at Udaipur.
Already work for preparing the DPR of the proposed Multimodal Logistics Hub at the bank of the River Gomati in Udaipur has already begun. For this project Transport department has been given 20 acres land. On top of that additional 36.33 acres land will also be allocated for the purpose. Besides, another Multimodal Logistics Hub is coming up in Sabroom.
