India suffered a heartbreaking 1-4 shootout defeat against hosts England after a gripping 2-2 draw in regulation time during the London leg of the FIH Pro League European tour at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre. Despite an outstanding brace from Dilpreet Singh, England held their nerve in the shootout to claim the bonus point in front of their home crowd.
The contest began cautiously, with both sides testing each other’s defence while looking for an early breakthrough. India earned the first penalty corner of the match in the opening minutes, but captain Harmanpreet Singh’s powerful drag-flick was brilliantly saved by England goalkeeper James Mazarelo. England responded with a penalty corner of their own in the fifth minute, but Nicholas Bandurak’s attempt was denied by the Indian defence.
India eventually broke the deadlock in the 10th minute through an excellent team move. Mandeep Singh displayed superb control as he dribbled along the baseline before delivering a precise pass to Dilpreet Singh, who finished with a diving effort to hand India a deserved 1-0 lead.
The visitors continued to create attacking opportunities in the second quarter and came close to doubling their advantage through a penalty corner. Amandeep Lakra’s drag-flick appeared destined for the net before Thomas Sorsby produced a heroic goal-line clearance to keep England in the contest.
England equalised in the 29th minute after David Goodfield capitalised on a loose ball inside the striking circle. Following a deflection, Goodfield unleashed a powerful volley past the Indian goalkeeper to level the score at 1-1 heading into halftime.
The third quarter witnessed a disciplined defensive display from both teams. India and England each earned penalty corners and created several promising chances, but resolute defending and composed goalkeeping ensured the deadlock remained intact.
England started the final quarter on the front foot and nearly took the lead when Nicholas Bandurak found himself unmarked at the far post. However, Indian goalkeeper Suraj Karkera produced a magnificent save to deny the forward and keep India level.
Persistent pressure from the hosts finally paid off in the 56th minute when Bandurak converted a low drag-flick from a penalty corner into the bottom-right corner, giving England a 2-1 advantage with just four minutes remaining.
India, however, refused to surrender. In the 58th minute, Sumit displayed exceptional skill to drive into the attacking circle before setting up Dilpreet Singh with a perfectly weighted pass. Dilpreet fired a powerful shot through the legs of goalkeeper James Mazarelo to score his second goal of the evening and restore parity at 2-2, sending the match into a shootout.
England proved far more clinical in the shootout, converting four of their attempts. Thomas Sorsby and James Albery successfully scored England’s opening efforts before captain Zachary Wallace converted both a penalty stroke and his final attempt to seal a 4-1 shootout victory. Harmanpreet Singh was India’s only successful scorer in the shootout.
