FIFA World Cup 2026 has become the highest-scoring and most-attended tournament in football history, surpassing previous World Cup records with 177 goals and over 3.6 million spectators. The expanded 48-team competition continues to rewrite history ahead of the knockout stage.
The FIFA World Cup 2026 has entered football history after becoming the highest-scoring and most-attended edition ever, marking another major milestone for the global tournament. With several matches still remaining before the knockout phase concludes, the expanded competition has already surpassed records that had stood since the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and the USA-hosted tournament in 1994.
The historic moment came during the United States’ thrilling Group D encounter against Turkey. USA defender Auston Trusty scored the tournament’s 173rd goal with an early strike, officially breaking the previous World Cup record of 172 goals that had been set across all 64 matches of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
The record was broken remarkably early in the tournament. It came in only the 59th match of the 2026 competition, highlighting the attacking quality and high-scoring nature of the expanded 48-team format. The excitement did not stop there, as Turkey rallied from behind to defeat co-host United States 3-2 in an entertaining contest. By the final whistle, the overall tournament goal tally had climbed to 177 goals, setting a new benchmark in FIFA World Cup history.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino celebrated the achievement, describing it as another example of the tournament’s remarkable success. Sharing his reaction on social media, Infantino noted that surpassing the previous record of 172 goals demonstrated the attacking talent, excitement and unforgettable moments that have defined the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Unlike previous editions featuring 32 teams and 64 matches, the 2026 tournament has expanded significantly. FIFA’s decision to increase participation to 48 nations has resulted in a total of 104 matches, creating additional opportunities for goals, dramatic contests and broader global representation. Even with more fixtures available, breaking the scoring record before the conclusion of the group stage has impressed football fans and analysts around the world.
In addition to rewriting the scoring record, FIFA World Cup 2026 has also become the most-attended tournament in history. More than 3,605,357 spectators have already attended matches across the competition, surpassing the previous cumulative attendance record of approximately 3.5 million fans established during the 1994 FIFA World Cup.
The record-breaking attendance reflects football’s unmatched global popularity. Fans from every continent have travelled to support their national teams across the tournament’s 16 host cities, creating electric atmospheres inside stadiums and vibrant celebrations outside match venues.
Infantino thanked supporters worldwide, saying the remarkable attendance figures demonstrated football’s unique ability to unite people through passion, joy and unforgettable shared experiences. He added that while new records continue to be achieved, the most important aspect of the tournament remains creating lifelong memories for millions of supporters.
The tournament had already hinted at its record-breaking potential during the opening week. Just six days after the spectacular opening match at Mexico City Stadium, the competition established a new all-time single-day attendance record on June 17 (IST). A combined crowd of 281,223 spectators attended four group-stage matches—France versus Senegal, Iraq versus Norway, Argentina versus Algeria and Austria versus Jordan—breaking the previous one-day attendance record of 277,070 set on June 28, 1994.
