India strengthens Africa trade ties as Piyush Goyal leads strategic WTO talks, boosting investment partnerships, expanding global economic cooperation, and reinforcing India’s stand on WTO reforms, including opposition to the Investment Facilitation for Development agreement.

At the sidelines of the 14th Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization (WTO MC14) in Cameroon, India took significant steps to strengthen its economic engagement with African nations, signaling a renewed push for global trade partnerships and investment expansion.

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal held a high-level meeting with ministers and ambassadors from the Africa Group, focusing on enhancing trade relations and boosting bilateral and multilateral investments. The discussions highlighted India’s growing commitment to Africa as a strategic economic partner in the Global South.

Taking to social media platform X, Goyal described the meeting as “meaningful,” noting that both sides engaged in substantive discussions on expanding India’s investment footprint across African economies. The dialogue also emphasized deep-rooted historical and civilizational ties, which continue to underpin the evolving trade relationship.

The meeting reaffirmed shared priorities, including improving market access, enhancing supply chain resilience, and fostering sustainable development through increased cooperation. India and African nations also exchanged views on key agenda items of WTO MC14, particularly in the context of global trade reforms and equitable growth.

India-EU Trade Talks Gain Momentum

On the sidelines of the summit, Goyal also met Maros Sefcovic, European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security. The leaders reviewed progress on the proposed India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA), a major initiative jointly announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in January 2026.

Both sides discussed key priorities under the WTO agenda while exploring new avenues to deepen bilateral economic cooperation. The FTA is expected to significantly enhance trade flows and create new opportunities for businesses in both regions.

Strengthening Bilateral Engagements

Goyal’s diplomatic outreach extended to other major economies as well. In a meeting with Nigeria’s Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Jumoke Oduwole, discussions focused on strengthening trade cooperation and aligning strategies under the WTO framework.

Similarly, talks with Mauro Vieira, Brazil’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, led to renewed efforts to expand the India-MERCOSUR Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA). Both nations emphasized the importance of enhancing bilateral trade and addressing shared economic challenges.

India’s Firm Stand on WTO Reforms

Amid ongoing negotiations, India made a strong statement by opposing the inclusion of the Investment Facilitation for Development (IFD) Agreement into the WTO framework. Drawing inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy of truth and integrity, India chose to stand firm on its principles despite global pressure.

Goyal warned that incorporating the IFD Agreement could undermine the WTO’s foundational principles and disrupt its functional balance. India’s stance reflects broader concerns among developing nations about maintaining fairness and inclusivity in global trade governance.

Looking Ahead

As WTO members continue discussions on reforms, including legal safeguards for plurilateral agreements, India’s proactive diplomacy signals its intent to shape a more balanced and equitable global trading system. The strengthened engagement with African nations, alongside parallel talks with the EU and other global players, positions India as a key driver of inclusive economic growth in the evolving international trade landscape.
