Illegal Bangladeshi national Sajal Rishi Das recaptured after dramatic escape attempt from GB Hospital Agartala under police custody. Incident raises serious concerns over security lapses, prisoner monitoring, and illegal border crossing enforcement in Tripura.
A dramatic security breach was narrowly averted on Thursday after an illegal Bangladeshi national attempted to escape from a government hospital while under police custody in Agartala, raising serious concerns over prisoner surveillance and cross-border security management.
The accused, identified as Sajal Rishi Das, a resident of Brahmanbaria district in Bangladesh, had reportedly entered Indian territory illegally. Following his arrest, he was lodged at Bishalgarh Central Jail under charges related to unlawful border crossing. Authorities later shifted him to GB Hospital in Agartala for medical treatment under strict police supervision.
According to official sources, the incident unfolded when Das allegedly tried to flee from the hospital premises during his treatment. Taking advantage of a momentary lapse in vigilance, he attempted to escape custody, triggering panic among hospital staff and security personnel.
However, the alertness and swift action of the on-duty police personnel prevented what could have turned into a serious security lapse. Officers immediately launched a pursuit and successfully apprehended the accused within a short span of time, ensuring that the situation remained under control.
The incident has once again highlighted the vulnerabilities in handling foreign nationals, particularly those accused of illegal infiltration. Security experts believe that hospitals, often considered less secure compared to correctional facilities, can become weak points if proper monitoring protocols are not strictly followed.
Officials have stated that an internal review is likely to be conducted to determine whether there were any lapses in security arrangements that allowed the accused to attempt such a move. Questions are being raised about the adequacy of escort personnel, surveillance measures, and coordination between hospital authorities and law enforcement agencies.
Meanwhile, law enforcement authorities have intensified vigilance in and around sensitive locations, including hospitals where undertrial prisoners are admitted. The recaptured individual has been shifted back under tighter security, and further legal proceedings are expected to follow.
The case also draws attention to the broader issue of illegal cross-border movement along the India-Bangladesh border, which continues to pose administrative and security challenges. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to maintaining strict border control and ensuring that individuals violating immigration laws are dealt with firmly.
