ICFAI University Tripura hosted a unique Rakhi celebration with Divyang children, promoting inclusivity, love, and togetherness. Differently-abled students handmade rakhis, fostering emotional bonds with faculty, staff, and peers. The event highlighted the university’s commitment to holistic development and integrating differently-abled individuals into mainstream social life.

In a touching display of compassion, inclusivity, and cultural unity, the Department of Special Education and Rehabilitation at ICFAI University Tripura organized a Unique Rakhi Celebration with differently-abled children (Divyang) on the university campus. The event, held under the theme of love, protection, and togetherness, brought faculty members, staff, students, and special children together in a celebration that went beyond tradition — fostering emotional bonds and championing social inclusion.

The celebration was unique not only because of its inclusive nature but also because the participating Divyang children were the regular beneficiaries of the university’s Special Education Lab. Their active involvement transformed the occasion into a memorable and meaningful experience, symbolizing the institution’s commitment to embracing diversity and promoting equality.

Creative Rakhis with a Purpose

Under the guidance of the faculty and with the support of students from the Department of Special Education and Rehabilitation, the Divyang children prepared beautiful, handmade rakhis. The materials used were creatively sourced from available waste items in the lab, showcasing both resourcefulness and a sustainable approach to craftwork.

On the day of the event, these rakhis were tied by the children to faculty members, staff, and students across the university. This simple yet deeply symbolic act bridged gaps and reinforced the festival’s essence — a pledge of protection, respect, and mutual care.

Message of Inclusivity from Leadership

Dr. Silali Banerjee, Principal of the Department of Special Education and Rehabilitation, emphasized that such initiatives are essential for weaving inclusive practices into the very fabric of academic and social life.

“Our goal is to nurture a compassionate and inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and celebrated. Events like these remind us that inclusion is not just a policy but a way of life,” she said.

Dr. Banerjee also highlighted the university’s ongoing efforts in providing consistent developmental support to differently-abled children. Students from both the Department of Special Education and Rehabilitation and the Department of Clinical Psychology are engaged in various initiatives to enhance the children’s overall development.

Holistic Development for Divyang Children

The collaborative work between these departments aims to strengthen the children’s social interaction and communication skills, improve memory and attention, build positive relationships, and reduce stress and anxiety. These initiatives are tailored to help integrate differently-abled individuals into the mainstream of social life, preparing them for a future where they are not only accepted but celebrated.

The Rakhi celebration, therefore, was more than a festive gathering. It served as an extension of the university’s inclusive education philosophy — a living example of how academic institutions can actively contribute to building a society where every individual, regardless of ability, has a place and a voice.

A Step Toward an Inclusive Society

The event was a reminder that festivals can be powerful tools for social change when celebrated with awareness and purpose. The smiles of the children, the joy on the faces of faculty and students, and the heartfelt interactions all reflected the success of the initiative.

For the Divyang children, it was an opportunity to showcase their talents, interact confidently with others, and experience the warmth of acceptance. For the university community, it was a lesson in empathy, patience, and the boundless joy that comes from inclusion.
