Heavy rainfall alert issued for four Tripura districts as IMD forecasts thunderstorms and lightning. West Tripura administration releases drowning prevention advisory urging residents to avoid risky water bodies during the monsoon amid rising flood and accident concerns.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued a heavy rainfall warning for several districts of Tripura, forecasting thunderstorms, lightning and continuous rainfall activity across the state over the next 24 hours.

According to the Meteorological Centre in Agartala, isolated places in North Tripura, Unakoti, Dhalai and West Tripura districts are likely to receive heavy rainfall ranging between 7 cm and 11 cm on Tuesday. The weather office also predicted light to moderate rain and thundershowers at many places across the northeastern state during the forecast period.

Officials stated that thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are also expected at isolated locations in different districts, raising concerns about weather-related risks during the ongoing monsoon season.

The forecast for Agartala and surrounding areas indicated generally cloudy skies with intermittent light to moderate rain or thundershowers. Weather officials advised residents to remain cautious during outdoor activities and avoid open areas during lightning incidents.

Rainfall data recorded till Monday evening showed that Agartala received 40.64 mm of rainfall by 5:30 pm, while Kailashahar recorded 24.66 mm during the same period. Continuous rainfall over the past several days has already increased water levels in rivers, ponds and drainage channels across multiple districts.

Amid the forecast of further heavy rain, the West Tripura district administration issued a public advisory aimed at preventing drowning incidents and water-related accidents during the monsoon season. The advisory was released by the office of the District Magistrate and Collector following several drowning-related fatalities reported in the district over the last two years.

The administration warned that rivers, ponds, streams, drains and other water bodies in many areas were currently flowing at dangerous levels due to persistent rainfall and monsoon conditions. Authorities said the risk of accidental drowning had increased significantly as water currents became stronger and low-lying areas remained waterlogged.

The advisory, circulated through the district Disaster Management Cell, urged residents to maintain a safe distance from hazardous water bodies and remain alert during periods of heavy rain, storms and strong winds. Officials said the initiative was intended to spread public awareness and reduce accidental deaths linked to unsafe water exposure.

Authorities identified several vulnerable locations requiring extra caution, including rivers, ponds, deep water holes, wetlands, erosion-prone riverbanks, abandoned low-lying land areas and water storage tanks.

Parents and guardians were specifically advised not to leave children unattended near ponds, rivers, wells or swimming pools. The administration stressed that children should always remain under adult supervision while swimming, bathing or playing near water bodies.

Residents living in vulnerable areas were also advised to avoid swimming alone or entering unfamiliar water bodies where water depth and current conditions are unknown. The advisory further warned people against entering water while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, stating that such situations significantly increase the risk of drowning.

Officials additionally encouraged people to learn basic swimming techniques and survival skills as part of long-term water safety awareness measures. Emergency response teams and local authorities are reportedly monitoring weather developments closely as rainfall activity is expected to continue across Tripura during the ongoing monsoon phase.
