Tripura Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu highlights ethical journalism, constitutional responsibility, and media accountability while felicitating senior journalists at the Tripura Legislative Assembly, stressing the media’s vital role in strengthening democracy and combating fake news.
The role of the media in a democratic country like India goes far beyond the mere dissemination of news, Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu said on Tuesday while inaugurating a felicitation programme for journalists at the Tripura Legislative Assembly.
Addressing the gathering, the Governor said that the media plays a crucial role in shaping public opinion, ensuring transparency, and strengthening accountability within democratic institutions. He described legislative reporting as a “sacred responsibility” that must be carried out strictly within the framework of the Constitution and the rule of law.
Emphasising ethical journalism, the Governor said accuracy, fairness, and a deep sense of responsibility are essential for credible reporting. While the Constitution guarantees freedom of the press, he noted that maintaining high ethical standards is equally important. Verified information, fact-based reporting, and constitutional responsibility, he added, form the foundation of trustworthy journalism.
Calling journalists the “guardians of truth,” the Governor warned that fake news and unverified information are not merely professional lapses but can mislead the public and disrupt peace and social harmony.
Several dignitaries also addressed the programme, including Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma, Deputy Speaker Ram Prasad Paul, Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury, MLAs Rampada Jamatia and Birajit Sinha. Speakers highlighted the media’s vital role in strengthening India’s democratic framework.
Tripura Legislative Assembly Secretary A.K. Nath delivered the welcome address.
