Chairman of Brahmaputra Board Rajiv Yadav on Monday insisted on the need of updating the existing outcomes of previous studies given the change in rainfall patterns of the region.
Addressing a press conference at the Civil Secretariat, Yadav said, “there are some studies available with the government but all of these need to be updated with inclusion of fresh inputs. In the meeting of the Brahmaputra Board held at the Civil Secretariat, we have decided to conduct fresh studies on Tripura Rivers, especially Manu and Howrah”.
The Board Members under stewardship of Yadav and in participation of Tripura state government officials organized its Board Meeting here in Agartala this year.
“Since all the North Eastern states come under the territorial jurisdiction of the Brahmaputra Board, we took the decision to hold this year’s board meeting at Agartala. The state government has extended us all sorts of support and during the meeting, we have discussed the master plan for soil erosion and flood prevention in the banks of Manu and Howrah Rivers”, said Yadav.
On being asked about the ill impacts of shifting cultivation and related hazards , he said, “We are planning to bring more officials to control this. There are two central water commission offices in Guwahati and Shillong. We will also hold a two-day workshop for the state government officials so that they can make projects acceptable by the central government”.
Yadav also said that periodic meetings should be organized in regular intervals for inter-state or international rivers. “I think for better management of rivers periodic meetings are very important”, he added.
