England head coach Thomas Tuchel and captain Harry Kane are ready for a challenging FIFA World Cup quarterfinal against Norway. England aims for a semifinal berth as Kane prepares for a crucial duel with Erling Haaland in a high-stakes knockout clash.
England head coach Thomas Tuchel has expressed confidence in his squad ahead of Saturday’s FIFA World Cup quarterfinal against Norway, describing the clash as one of the toughest tests of England’s campaign so far. Captain Harry Kane also acknowledged the quality of the Norwegian side but insisted that England is fully prepared to take the next step in its pursuit of World Cup glory.
Speaking during a pre-match press conference in Miami on Friday, Tuchel confirmed that nearly his entire squad is available for selection. The only absentee is defender Jarell Quansah, who is suspended after receiving a red card during England’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Mexico in the Round of 16.
“Everyone was available in training, which is exactly what we want,” Tuchel said. “We have a full squad to choose from, apart from our suspended player, Jarell Quansah.”
The England manager emphasized that while the victory over Mexico was an important achievement, his players remain focused on the bigger objective of lifting the FIFA World Cup trophy.
“We took a big step in our last match, but it was only one step. We are still hungry and have a big objective. The next step is to win the quarterfinal,” Tuchel said.
The German coach also praised Kane’s leadership and influence on the team, highlighting the striker’s experience and current form as vital assets for England.
“He is our leader and our captain. He leads by example,” Tuchel said. “He is in the form of his life and at the highest point of his career, which helps us enormously.”
Kane, meanwhile, expects Norway to provide a stern challenge despite returning to the FIFA World Cup after a 28-year absence. The England captain described the Scandinavian side as a confident team enjoying impressive momentum.
“They are riding a wave of freedom and confidence,” Kane said. “They are very well coached, both with and without the ball. It is our job to identify weaknesses and changes in their structure. We want to impose our game.”
One of the biggest attractions of the quarterfinal will be the battle between Kane and Norway’s prolific striker Erling Haaland. Haaland has scored seven goals during the tournament, just one more than Kane, while both remain in contention for the Golden Boot behind Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe, who lead the scoring charts with eight goals each.
Kane was full of praise for the Manchester City forward.
“Erling has been incredible. Physically, he is a machine and a beast,” Kane said. “I see myself as a different type of player, although I score the same goals. I like to be involved with the play a little bit more. I respect him a lot as a player and as a professional. Obviously, I’m hoping he has a quiet day tomorrow, but he’s a fantastic player.”
Although individual awards remain important, Kane stressed that winning the FIFA World Cup is his ultimate ambition.
“My main goal is to win the World Cup more than another Golden Boot,” he said. “I’m a goalscorer and if I’m scoring goals, it obviously helps the team.”
England enters the quarterfinal with considerable experience in major international tournaments. The Three Lions reached the World Cup semifinals in 2018, advanced to the quarterfinals in 2022, and finished runners-up at the UEFA European Championships in both 2020 and 2024.
Kane believes those experiences have strengthened the squad mentally and tactically.
“A lot of these players have played in big games and experienced big moments,” he said. “I think we are better prepared for this situation.”

Saturday’s winner will book a place in the FIFA World Cup semifinals, where either Argentina or Switzerland awaits. With England chasing its first World Cup title since 1966 and Norway eager to continue its remarkable comeback on football’s biggest stage, the quarterfinal promises to be one of the tournament’s most compelling encounters.
