Egypt and Qatar urged the United States and Iran to act with responsibility and wisdom as tensions escalated in the Strait of Hormuz, stressing diplomacy, regional stability, and political solutions amid renewed military clashes and fragile ceasefire efforts.

Rising tensions in the Middle East have prompted Egypt and Qatar to intensify diplomatic efforts aimed at preventing further escalation between the United States and Iran, as renewed military confrontations near the Strait of Hormuz continue to alarm regional and global powers.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani held a phone conversation on Saturday in which both leaders urged Washington and Tehran to demonstrate “responsibility” and “wisdom” during what they described as an extremely delicate phase for regional stability.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Egypt, the two diplomats stressed that diplomacy must remain the primary path for resolving disputes and avoiding a wider conflict that could destabilise the Gulf region and threaten international trade routes.

The discussions focused heavily on the ongoing negotiation efforts between the United States and Iran. Both sides underlined the importance of sustaining dialogue and political engagement, arguing that long-term regional security can only be achieved through peaceful solutions rather than military confrontation.

The renewed diplomatic push comes amid escalating clashes around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important shipping corridors. The latest violence follows months of fragile ceasefire efforts and unsuccessful peace negotiations.

On February 28, joint military strikes were launched by the United States and Israel against Iranian targets, dramatically increasing tensions in the region. A ceasefire agreement was later reached on April 8 between the opposing sides, raising hopes for de-escalation. However, subsequent peace talks held in Pakistan reportedly failed to produce a lasting agreement.

In recent days, hostilities intensified again after reports of US strikes on Iranian vessels and coastal positions near the Strait of Hormuz. Iran responded with missile and drone attacks targeting American naval assets operating in the area.

Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guard Corps Navy announced early Friday that it had carried out a “large-scale and precise combined operation” involving ballistic missiles, anti-ship cruise missiles, and explosive drones against US destroyers in the Gulf waters.

Iranian military officials claimed the operation caused “significant damage” to several American vessels, forcing three destroyers to retreat from the Strait of Hormuz zone. However, the United States strongly denied those claims.

The United States Central Command stated that American forces successfully intercepted what it described as “unprovoked Iranian attacks” and responded with defensive strikes while ensuring the safety of US naval operations in the region.

CENTCOM further stated that the United States was not seeking broader escalation but remained fully prepared to defend its forces and strategic interests.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that the American destroyers involved in the operation had not suffered any damage during their transit through the Strait of Hormuz.

The continuing tensions have raised concerns among international observers over the possibility of a wider regional conflict that could disrupt global energy supplies and increase geopolitical instability across the Middle East.

With diplomatic channels still open, Egypt and Qatar are attempting to position themselves as key mediators capable of encouraging dialogue between Washington and Tehran. Their latest intervention highlights growing concern among Arab nations that further military escalation could have devastating economic and security consequences for the entire region.
