ECI Begins EVM, VVPAT Commissioning for Tamil Nadu and West Bengal Phase I Polls

Must Read

Election Commission (ECI) has begun the Commissioning of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPATs) from today for Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, Phase I.

According to the Commission, the process is being carried out in constituencies going to polls on the 23rd of April, in the presence of candidates, their authorized representatives, and general observers. It added that the Commissioning will be followed by a mock poll of 1,000 votes in 5 percent of the EVMs randomly selected by the candidates, allowing candidates to also register the mock polls themselves.

Before commissioning, EVMs were allotted to their respective polling stations through a 2-stage randomization process through the EVM management System. In the first stage, EVMs were randomly allocated from District level warehouses to the Assembly Constituencies, while in the second stage, EVMs were randomly allocated from the AC level to the polling station level.

ECI said that the First Randomization was done through EVM Management System by the DEOs in the presence of the representatives of National and State Recognized Political Parties, while second randomization was completed through EVM Management System by the Returning Officers in the presence of contesting candidates, their agents and General Observers. Constituency-wise lists of first randomized EVMs and VVPATs were shared with the representatives of all National and State Recognized Political Parties at the respective district headquarters.

The list has also been shared with all the contesting candidates.

The commission informed that the total number of polling stations in Tamil Nadu is 75,064, while in the first phase, 44,378 stations are going to polls in West Bengal on April 23rd.
