West Tripura DM has made prior SDM permission mandatory for all earth cutting, excavation, and soil transportation activities across the district. The administration aims to curb illegal earth excavation, prevent environmental damage, protect public infrastructure, and reduce monsoon-related disaster risks under the Disaster Management Act, 2025.
The West Tripura district administration has made prior permission from the concerned Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) mandatory for all earth excavation, soil cutting, and soil transportation activities across the district.
The decision comes in response to growing concerns over unauthorized earth-cutting operations reportedly being carried out in different parts of West Tripura without obtaining official approval. District authorities have observed that such unregulated activities pose serious threats to the environment, public infrastructure, and private properties, particularly during the monsoon season.
According to an official directive issued by the District Magistrate (DM) of West Tripura, no individual, contractor, organization, institution, or agency will be allowed to dig, cut, excavate, or transport soil from any location within the district without securing prior permission from the respective SDM. The order has been issued under the relevant provisions of the Disaster Management Act, 2025.
Officials stated that indiscriminate earth excavation has emerged as a matter of serious concern in recent years. Unregulated soil extraction can weaken land stability, increase the risk of erosion, contribute to waterlogging, and create conditions that may lead to landslides and other disaster-related incidents. Such activities can also damage roads, drainage systems, and nearby structures, causing inconvenience and potential safety hazards for local residents.
The administration emphasized that the restrictions are not intended to hinder legitimate development work but to ensure that all excavation activities are carried out in a regulated and environmentally responsible manner. Authorities believe that proper scrutiny and approval procedures will help minimize risks while allowing necessary construction and infrastructure projects to proceed legally.
To ensure strict enforcement of the directive, Panchayat Secretaries and Ward Secretaries have been entrusted with monitoring activities within their respective jurisdictions. They have been instructed to remain vigilant and immediately report any instances of illegal earth cutting, excavation, or soil transportation to the concerned sub-divisional authorities for necessary action.
The district administration has also warned that any violation of the order will attract legal action under the applicable provisions of law. Officials reiterated that the primary objective of the directive is to s9afeguard the environment, protect public assets, and prevent activities that could create hazardous conditions for residents.
