BJP nominates Jahar Chakraborty for Dharmanagar by-election in Tripura, intensifying political contest against Left Front candidate Amitabh Dutta. Voting on April 9 with over 46,000 voters, tight security, and key national leaders backing BJP campaign.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has officially nominated Jahar Chakraborty as its candidate for the upcoming by-election to the Dharmanagar Assembly constituency in North Tripura district, setting the stage for a closely watched political contest in the region.
The decision was finalized during a central election committee meeting chaired by BJP national president Nitin Nabin on Wednesday. The high-profile meeting was attended by top national leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, highlighting the strategic importance of the by-election.
Soon after the announcement on Thursday, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha congratulated Jahar Chakraborty and expressed confidence in the party’s prospects in the constituency. Party insiders indicate that the BJP is aiming to consolidate its support base and retain its influence in North Tripura through a strong campaign.
The opposition Left Front has already announced Amitabh Dutta as its candidate, setting up a direct contest between the two major political blocs. The by-election is expected to witness intense campaigning, with both sides focusing on local development issues, governance, and voter outreach.
According to the election schedule, polling will take place on April 9, while the last date for filing nominations is March 23. Scrutiny of nominations is slated for March 24, and candidates will have until March 26 to withdraw their nominations. The counting of votes will be conducted on May 4.
The 56-Dharmanagar Assembly constituency has a total electorate of 46,143 voters, including 23,763 women and 22,380 men. To ensure a smooth and transparent voting process, the district administration has established 55 polling stations across the constituency, with 32 located in urban areas and 23 in rural regions.

Additionally, 12 sector civil officers have been deployed to oversee the election process, with four officers kept in reserve to handle contingencies. Authorities have emphasized strict adherence to election guidelines to ensure free, fair, and peaceful polling.
As the campaign gains momentum, the Dharmanagar by-election is shaping up to be a significant political battleground in Tripura, drawing attention from both state and national leadership.
