CPI(M) leader and Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury welcomed the Supreme Court’s directive on TTAADC Village Committee elections, stressing democratic rights in tribal areas. He announced statewide mass deputations in July and protests against new labour codes in August, while raising concerns over electoral roll revision, unemployment, and economic stagnation in Tripura.

Leader of Opposition and CPI(M) Politburo member Jitendra Chaudhury on Friday welcomed the Supreme Court’s directive regarding the long-pending elections to the Village Committees under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), stating that the court’s intervention would help restore democratic rights in tribal areas.

Addressing a press conference, Chaudhury said that voters residing in TTAADC-administered regions would finally get an opportunity to exercise their democratic rights through the Village Committee elections, which have remained overdue since the tenure of the previous committees ended in 2021.

According to him, the delay in conducting the elections had deprived residents of tribal areas of their constitutional and democratic rights. He expressed hope that the Supreme Court’s direction would pave the way for the timely conduct of the polls and strengthen grassroots democratic institutions in the autonomous district council areas.

Referring to the 2021 TTAADC elections, Chaudhury alleged that the polls were held in a highly polarised political environment. He claimed that issues relating to tribal identity, land rights, and the protection of indigenous interests had dominated the political discourse during that period.

The CPI(M) leader announced that the Left Front would intensify its political activities across tribal regions ahead of the forthcoming Village Committee elections. He said the party would focus on issues affecting local communities, including development, employment opportunities, land rights, and welfare measures.

Chaudhury also expressed concern over the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. He warned that the process could create difficulties for certain sections of voters and potentially affect their voting rights. He assured that the CPI(M) would stand beside citizens facing challenges during the electoral roll revision exercise and provide necessary support.

Highlighting the broader socio-economic situation in the state, Chaudhury alleged that Tripura was experiencing economic stagnation and increasing migration of unemployed youth and job seekers to other states in search of better opportunities. He stressed the need for urgent policy interventions to address unemployment and strengthen the state’s economy.

Announcing future political programmes, Chaudhury said the CPI(M) would organise mass deputations across Tripura during the first week of July, focusing on employment generation, public welfare schemes, and issues affecting common people. He further declared that the party would launch statewide protests against the newly introduced labour codes and organise a civil disobedience programme on August 10 as part of its agitation campaign.
