Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha slams TIPRA Motha’s divisive politics, warns against threats to journalists, and signals cracks in the BJP-TIPRA alliance ahead of ADC elections, intensifying political tensions in the state’s tribal heartland.
In a politically charged atmosphere ahead of the Autonomous District Council (ADC) elections, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha launched a sharp and direct attack on coalition partner Tipra Motha, accusing the party of promoting divisive politics and undermining democratic values.
Addressing a massive tribal gathering at Demdum under the Fatikroy constituency on Tuesday, Saha positioned himself at the center of Tripura’s evolving political landscape, delivering a fiery speech that signaled growing tensions within the BJP-TIPRA alliance.
Accusations of Divisive Politics and ADC Mismanagement
Without mincing words, the Chief Minister accused TIPRA Motha of misleading tribal communities through slogans such as “Tipraland” and “Greater Tipraland.” He alleged that governance under the Autonomous District Council has turned into a “mockery,” claiming that public funds are being misused while development remains neglected.

Saha questioned the priorities of the ADC leadership, alleging that leaders were frequently traveling abroad while basic development concerns of tribal communities remained unresolved. “Attempts to derail democracy through violence, intimidation, and anarchy will not succeed. For the sake of peace, harmony, and development, people must remain vigilant and united,” he declared before the large gathering.
He further warned that incidents such as tearing down BJP flags, attacking party workers, and acts of arson would not be tolerated. According to him, lists of offenders are being prepared and strict action would follow. “No one will be spared,” he emphasized.
Strong Warning Over Threats to Journalists
In a rare and significant move, Saha also indirectly rebuked members of his own party over recent threats and abusive remarks against journalists. Though he did not name individuals directly, the remarks were widely seen as a response to controversial comments involving Deputy Speaker Ram Prasad Pal and TIPRA Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma.
“The media is considered the fourth pillar of democracy,” Saha said. “It acts as a watchdog, holds the government accountable, informs the public, and shapes public opinion. Such behavior will not be accepted. Action will be taken.”
His remarks have been viewed as an attempt to reinforce democratic accountability and distance the state government from any perceived hostility toward the press.
Emphasis on Transparency and Inclusive Development
Saha reiterated that the state government is committed to transparent governance and socio-economic development for all communities. He stressed that his administration is working toward the development of Kokborok and other minority languages while ensuring that tribal traditions and cultural identity remain protected.
“Our government seeks the socio-economic development of people from all sections of society. We want to create a new Tripura with people from every community,” he said.

Highlighting the vision of Narendra Modi, Saha said the state government is guided by the principle of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas.” He credited the Prime Minister with transforming the nature of Indian politics and promoting corruption-free governance.
According to Saha, the latest Union Budget includes substantial allocations for the development of tribal communities. “This government is committed to ensuring respect for the Janajati people. We want their culture and traditions to remain intact,” he added.
Political Defections Boost BJP Morale
The rally also marked a notable political moment as 215 voters from different political parties joined the Bharatiya Janata Party during the event. The Chief Minister welcomed the new members, calling their decision timely and significant.
“I am truly impressed by the large number of tribal brothers and sisters present at this meeting. This reflects their support for the BJP and their faith in Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” Saha said.
Scheduled Caste Welfare Minister Sudhangshu Das, addressing the gathering, expressed confidence that the BJP would secure all 28 seats in the upcoming ADC elections. He accused former TIPRA Motha chief Pradyot Kishore Deb Barma of orchestrating attacks on BJP workers.
Meanwhile, Social Welfare and Social Education Minister Tinku Roy described the large turnout as proof of people’s faith in good governance, welfare policies, and strong leadership.
Alliance Under Strain Ahead of ADC Elections
Political observers believe Saha’s public criticism of TIPRA Motha signals widening cracks within the coalition. Although the BJP and TIPRA Motha have worked together politically, their alliance has long been considered uneasy. With ADC elections approaching, speculation is intensifying over whether the partnership can withstand mounting tensions.
Opposition parties are closely monitoring developments, anticipating potential realignments before the polls. The Chief Minister’s strong rhetoric suggests that the upcoming elections may not only determine control of the ADC but also reshape the broader political equation in Tripura.
