Legendary Indian sprinter and Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president P.T. Usha has taken a nostalgic trip back to the 1980s, sharing photographs from her celebrated athletics career as the decade’s retro culture enjoys renewed popularity on social media.
“Heard the 80s are trending again, so I thought I’d take you back to my era,” Usha wrote while sharing the photographs. The post offered followers a glimpse into the period when she emerged as one of the most prominent figures in Indian athletics and earned the nickname ‘Payyoli Express’.
The 1980s were a defining decade for Usha, whose performances on the international athletics circuit helped establish her as a trailblazer for Indian women in sport. She represented India at three Olympic Games — Moscow in 1980, Los Angeles in 1984 and Seoul in 1988.
Her most memorable Olympic performance came at the 1984 Los Angeles Games, where she narrowly missed out on a medal in the 400-metre hurdles. Usha finished fourth in the final, missing the bronze medal by a fraction of a second. Despite the disappointment, her performance marked a historic moment as she became the first Indian woman to reach an Olympic athletics final.
Usha’s achievements extended well beyond the Olympic stage. At the 1982 Asian Games, she secured India’s first athletics medal at the continental event. Four years later, she produced one of the most impressive performances of her career at the 1986 Asian Games in Seoul, winning four gold medals.

Usha’s influence in Indian sport expanded further in 2022 when she was nominated to the Rajya Sabha. Later that year, she was elected unopposed as president of the Indian Olympic Association, becoming the first woman to head the country’s apex Olympic body.
