In a determined move to combat the persistent issue of drug abuse, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, who recently took oath for his second term, has made it a top priority to make Tripura a drug-free state. Recognizing the lack of effective measures in the past, Dr. Saha has intensified the “Drugs-free Tripura” campaign, providing the police department with a free hand to eradicate the drug menace at its roots.
Under the visionary leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, Tripura Police has demonstrated remarkable dedication in their efforts to combat drug trafficking. The ongoing Nesha Mukt Tripura Campaign has yielded promising results, with 245 cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in 2023 alone. Additionally, more than 373 accused individuals have been apprehended as of May, signalling a significant dent in the drug trade.
The dedicated efforts of the Tripura Police have yielded significant results, with narcotic items worth more than Rs 70 crore being seized and narcotics worth over Rs 12.5 crore being destroyed so far this year. These figures highlight the commitment of the police department in addressing the drug menace head-on.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, who has always emphasized the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) goal of creating a peaceful environment and aiding the people, appealed to citizens to actively participate in the fight against drugs. He encouraged residents to report any information or suspicious activities related to drugs to the police, ensuring the community’s active involvement in achieving the objective of a “Drug-Free Tripura.”
To support this collaborative effort, the Tripura Police has set up toll-free number 112, urging citizens to come forward and share any pertinent information regarding narcotics. The identity of informants will be kept confidential, fostering a safe and secure environment for citizens to contribute to the cause.
In addition to the enforcement measures, Tripura Police has implemented various proactive strategies, including Synergy Checking at Naka points on national highways, state highways, and arterial roads. These efforts aim to deter drug trafficking and facilitate frequent raids and intensive operations at suspected locations, with a particular focus on the seizure and destruction of ganja.
Acknowledging the commendable efforts of Tripura Police, central agencies have recognized the state for its significant contributions in the fight against drugs. Tripura stands out as the second-largest seizure point in the Northeast region and leads in the destruction of narcotics items, reflecting the effectiveness of the state’s initiatives.
As Tripura marches forward in its mission to become a drug-free state, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha and the police department remain dedicated to upholding their vision. With the active participation of the citizens, these combined efforts will ensure a safer and brighter future for the people of Tripura.
