BJP releases first list of 144 candidates for West Bengal Assembly elections featuring teachers, doctors, social workers and political leaders. Suvendu Adhikari contests from Nandigram and Bhabanipur, setting stage for potential electoral rematch with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday unveiled its first list of 144 candidates for the upcoming Assembly elections in West Bengal, showcasing a diverse mix of professionals ranging from teachers and doctors to social workers and retired defence personnel. The state will go to polls next month in two phases to elect representatives for all 294 Assembly constituencies, and the party’s initial list reflects a strategic attempt to blend political experience with professional expertise.

One of the most striking features of the BJP’s candidate lineup is the strong representation from the academic sector. According to the list, 32 of the 144 nominees are teachers, underlining the party’s focus on education professionals and grassroots intellectual leadership in the state’s political landscape. Apart from educators, the list also includes eight social workers, six advocates, five doctors, three former journalists, three spiritual leaders and three retired defence personnel.

Among the notable candidates from the media fraternity is current BJP state vice-president Jagannath Chattopadhyay, who previously worked as a journalist before entering active politics. The inclusion of professionals from multiple sectors reflects the party’s effort to bring individuals with varied real-world experiences into the legislative process.

Compared to the 2021 Assembly elections, the representation from the film and glamour industry in the BJP’s candidate list has been significantly reduced this time. Only two figures from the entertainment and fashion world have been nominated. Actor-turned-politician Rudranil Ghosh will contest from the Shibpur constituency in Howrah district, while fashion designer-turned-politician Agnimitra Paul has been renominated from the Asansol (Dakshin) seat in West Burdwan district. Paul is currently serving as the BJP legislator from the constituency.

The candidate list also reflects a blend of experienced politicians and new entrants. Out of the 144 nominees, 41 are sitting BJP legislators, three are former Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), and two have previously served as Members of Parliament. The party has also attempted to introduce younger faces, with 36 candidates below the age of 40. Meanwhile, 72 candidates fall within the 41–55 age bracket, 32 are between 56 and 70 years old, and four nominees are above the age of 70.

Women representation in the list remains relatively limited, with 11 women candidates among the 144 nominees. However, party leaders claim that the final candidate lists are expected to feature more women contenders as additional phases of nominations are announced.

Another noteworthy inclusion in the list is Sumitra Chattopadhyay, a retired administrative official and a fifth-generation descendant of the celebrated author Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, who wrote the iconic national song Vande Mataram. Her nomination has drawn attention due to the historical and cultural significance associated with her family lineage.

Perhaps the most politically significant announcement in the list is the candidature of Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari. Adhikari has been fielded from two constituencies — Nandigram in East Midnapore district and Bhabanipur in south Kolkata.

Bhabanipur is currently represented by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who won the seat in a by-election after the 2021 Assembly polls. If Banerjee contests again from Bhabanipur in the upcoming elections, it could set the stage for a high-profile political rematch between her and Adhikari.

The rivalry between the two leaders dates back to the 2021 Assembly elections when Adhikari defeated Banerjee in the fiercely contested Nandigram constituency. That victory marked a dramatic moment in the state’s political history and elevated Adhikari’s stature within the BJP.

Political analysts believe the BJP’s first candidate list signals a strategic attempt to present a balanced mix of seasoned politicians, young aspirants and professionals from diverse backgrounds. With the remaining candidates yet to be announced, the party appears focused on broadening its appeal across different social and professional segments as it prepares for another intense electoral battle in West Bengal.
