Veteran CPI-M leader T.K. Govindan quits party to contest as independent from Taliparamba in Kerala polls, sparking a major rebellion in Kannur. The crisis erupts over P.K. Shyamala’s candidature, intensifying political tensions before the crucial April 9 elections.

A major political rebellion has erupted within the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in Kerala’s politically significant Kannur district ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. Veteran party leader T. K. Govindan on Monday announced that he is quitting the party and will contest the election as an independent candidate from the Taliparamba constituency.

The development follows mounting internal opposition to the party’s decision to field P. K. Shyamala, the wife of CPI-M state secretary M. V. Govindan, as the Left Democratic Front (LDF) candidate from the constituency in the April 9 polls.

Taliparamba has long been a stronghold of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), and the internal dissent has exposed rare cracks in the party’s organisational unity in Kannur — often considered the ideological heartland of the CPI-M in Kerala.

Veteran Leader Breaks Ranks

The 75-year-old Govindan, currently serving as chairman of the Kerala State Handloom Development Corporation, had represented Taliparamba for two consecutive terms in the past. His decision to leave the party comes after he reportedly raised objections during internal discussions regarding Shyamala’s candidature.

Speaking to the media during a lengthy interaction on Monday evening, Govindan indicated that serious dissatisfaction existed within sections of the party in Kannur.

I have told my wife and my close friends not to leave the party. But I am stepping out because things are not fair or right within the party in Kannur,” he said.

Govindan had stayed away from several party meetings over the past week, including constituency committee discussions and district secretariat meetings, signalling growing tensions within the local party leadership.

Controversy Over Candidate Selection

The controversy stems from the CPI-M leadership’s decision to nominate Shyamala after M. V. Govindan stepped down from the seat. Critics within the party argue that the move reflects favouritism and undermines internal democratic processes.

Govindan strongly criticised the decision, saying that other qualified women leaders within the party were overlooked.

How can a seat be given to the wife when the husband, who has already served multiple terms, steps down? There were other capable women candidates, but only the wife was considered,” he said.

The controversy deepened after senior CPI-M leader P. Jayarajan, who was tasked with overseeing the Taliparamba constituency, shared Shyamala’s election poster on social media. His Facebook post describing her as “Dear comrade Shyamala, teacher in Taliparamba” triggered a flood of critical comments from party supporters and political observers.

Allegations and Political Fallout

Govindan also revived past controversies during his media briefing, referring to the suicide of NRI businessman Sajan Parayil. He alleged that Shyamala had taken a rigid stance as chairperson of the Anthoor municipality and refused to grant approval for Parayil’s business venture.

Additionally, he questioned the party’s alleged double standards in handling controversies involving leaders such as P. P. Divya, who faced allegations related to the death of Kannur Additional District Magistrate Naveen Babu.

Govindan further criticised the party’s decision to shift senior leader K. K. Shailaja from her sitting constituency, calling it another example of questionable electoral strategy.

He also expressed support for allegations raised by expelled CPI-M leader V. Kunhikrishnan regarding the alleged misuse of funds collected for a martyr memorial by Payyannur MLA T. I. Madhusoodanan.

I do not understand why Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan remains silent on these matters,” Govindan said.

Congress Watching Developments

With Govindan declaring his independent candidacy, the political equation in Taliparamba could shift dramatically. The Indian National Congress is reportedly watching the developments closely and has delayed announcing its candidate for the constituency.

Govindan made it clear that he would accept support from the Congress if offered but ruled out any alliance with communal political forces.

Meanwhile, another expelled CPI-M leader, Kunhikrishnan, has also announced that he will contest the election as an independent candidate from Payyannur, adding further pressure on the ruling Left front.

As the April 9 election approaches, the rebellion in Kannur could test the organisational discipline of the CPI-M and reshape the electoral dynamics in one of Kerala’s most politically sensitive regions.
