Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha addressed the Constitution Murder Day programme, recalling the 1975 Emergency and alleging that democratic rights were suppressed after the Allahabad High Court verdict against former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, while emphasizing the importance of safeguarding India’s Constitution.

Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Wednesday addressed a programme organized by the state unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to observe “Constitution Murder Day,” where he reflected on the period of the Emergency imposed in 1975 and stressed the importance of protecting India’s democratic institutions and constitutional values.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Saha said that the Indian Constitution is the foundation of the country’s democracy and alleged that democratic principles were undermined during the tenure of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Referring to historical events, he stated that the Allahabad High Court had, on June 12, 1975, set aside Indira Gandhi’s election and barred her from contesting elections for six years.

According to Dr. Saha, despite the court’s verdict, a nationwide Emergency was declared on June 25, 1975. He claimed that the decision resulted in the suspension of democratic rights and led to what he described as nearly 21 months of repression across the country.

“The Indian Constitution is the very foundation of our democracy. It must always be respected and protected,” Dr. Saha said while addressing party leaders, workers, and supporters attending the programme.

The Chief Minister stated that the BJP observes “Constitution Murder Day” to remember what the party describes as one of the darkest chapters in India’s democratic history. He said the occasion serves as a reminder of the importance of safeguarding constitutional institutions, protecting civil liberties, and ensuring that democratic values remain strong.

Dr. Saha also urged citizens, particularly the younger generation, to remain aware of the country’s constitutional framework and democratic traditions. He emphasized that preserving democracy requires active public participation and respect for the rule of law.

The programme was attended by BJP leaders, elected representatives, and party workers from across the state. Speakers at the event reiterated the party’s commitment to strengthening democratic governance and constitutional values while recalling the events surrounding the Emergency period.
