Bollywood actress Urmila Matondkar reveals she nearly rejected the iconic “Chamma Chamma” song from China Gate because item songs carried a negative image at the time. Director Raj Kumar Santoshi convinced her, leading to one of Bollywood’s most memorable dance performances.

Bollywood actress Urmila Matondkar has revealed that she almost turned down the now-iconic dance number “Chamma Chamma” from the 1998 film China Gate, admitting that she was initially uncomfortable with performing an item song because of the negative perception attached to such performances during that period.

The actress made the revelation while appearing as a special guest on the upcoming episode of India’s Best Dancer Season 5, where she spoke candidly about the making of one of Bollywood’s most celebrated dance tracks. Urmila also shared behind-the-scenes stories from the shoot and explained how director Raj Kumar Santoshi ultimately convinced her to take on the project.

Recalling the offer, Urmila said she was approached by acclaimed filmmaker Raj Kumar Santoshi to make a guest appearance in China Gate through a special dance number. However, she admitted she was not in favour of the idea because item songs carried a negative reputation in the film industry at the time.

Speaking on the show, Urmila explained that she believed audiences often judged actresses who performed item songs unfairly. Because of this perception, she was reluctant to accept the offer despite the director’s request.

According to Urmila, Raj Kumar Santoshi changed her perspective with a heartfelt conversation. She recalled that the director told her he wanted to create a dance number that would surpass legendary songs remembered for their choreography and visual appeal. His confidence in the project and vision for the song eventually persuaded her to reconsider.

The actress said Santoshi’s passion for creating something unforgettable convinced her that the performance would be remembered for its artistic value rather than simply being labelled as an item number. Trusting the filmmaker’s vision, she agreed to perform in the song, a decision that would later become one of the defining moments of her career.

Urmila also shared an interesting anecdote about the song’s production schedule. Curious about the shooting timeline, she asked choreographer Ganesh Master how many days the sequence would require. She was informed that the original plan was to complete filming over twelve days.

However, to everyone’s surprise, the entire song was wrapped up in just three days. Despite the significantly shorter schedule, the team managed to create one of Bollywood’s most visually memorable dance sequences, proving that meticulous planning and dedication can deliver exceptional results in limited time.

Judge Karisma Kapoor, who was present on the show, also reflected on the immense popularity of “Chamma Chamma” when it was released. She recalled appreciating both the song and Urmila’s energetic performance, saying it immediately stood out as a spectacular dance number that audiences loved.

Over the years, “Chamma Chamma” has continued to enjoy immense popularity among Bollywood fans. Its vibrant choreography, colourful visuals, catchy music and Urmila Matondkar’s electrifying screen presence have helped the song remain a favourite across generations. It is still regarded as one of the most iconic dance performances in Hindi cinema.

Urmila’s latest revelation offers fans a fascinating glimpse into the story behind the making of the legendary song. Her candid admission that she almost declined the project highlights how perceptions surrounding item songs have evolved over time and underscores the importance of Raj Kumar Santoshi’s belief in the artistic potential of “Chamma Chamma.”
