After Biplab Deb’s intervention, a thalassemia patient from South Tripura receives ₹3 lakh medical aid from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund, enabling advanced treatment at CMC Vellore and highlighting swift central support for critical healthcare needs.
A young thalassemia patient from South Tripura has received crucial financial assistance from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) following timely intervention by West Tripura Lok Sabha Member of Parliament and former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb. The support has brought significant relief to the child’s family, highlighting the role of swift political coordination in addressing urgent healthcare needs.
According to officials, a Class II student suffering from thalassemia major has been sanctioned medical assistance amounting to ₹3 lakh from the PMNRF. The aid has been approved to support advanced treatment for Suprita Bhaumik, daughter of Plaban Bhaumik, a resident of Jolaibari in South Tripura district. The child is currently undergoing specialized medical care at the Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMC), Vellore, one of India’s leading institutions for complex and chronic disease management.
Thalassemia major is a severe inherited blood disorder that requires lifelong treatment, including regular blood transfusions and advanced medical supervision. For families from economically modest backgrounds, the cost of sustained treatment at premier medical institutions often becomes overwhelming. In this case, the financial assistance from the PMNRF is expected to significantly reduce the burden on the family and ensure continuity of care.
The development was shared by MP Biplab Kumar Deb, who expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the prompt assistance extended to the child. Deb stated that after receiving a request seeking financial support for advanced treatment, he immediately forwarded the proposal to the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund. The application was processed, and approval was granted within a short span, reflecting administrative responsiveness to medical emergencies involving children.
As per the sanction order issued by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), a grant of ₹3 lakh has been approved in principle. The amount is intended to partially cover expenses related to the treatment of thalassemia major, based on medical estimates and supporting certificates dated October 6, 2025. The assistance underscores the PMNRF’s role in providing targeted financial relief to patients facing life-threatening or chronic illnesses.
The PMO has directed the Christian Medical College and Hospital, Vellore, to take responsibility for the patient’s treatment upon receipt of the sanction letter. The hospital has also been instructed to submit details of the actual expenditure incurred in the prescribed format to facilitate the release of funds. Officials clarified that the disbursement will be limited to admissible expenses incurred during the approved treatment period and will not exceed the sanctioned amount.
In addition, the PMO has asked the hospital authorities to verify the authenticity and identity of the patient before extending treatment under the PMNRF sanction. The hospital must immediately inform the Prime Minister’s Office if any discrepancy is detected during verification or treatment. Such measures are aimed at ensuring transparency and proper utilization of public funds allocated for medical relief.
The request for financial assistance was officially received by the Prime Minister’s Office on November 7, 2025. The sanction letter issued in response will remain valid for a period of two years from the date of issue. However, the hospital has been instructed to commence treatment within one year to ensure timely medical intervention for the child.
In his message, Deb also noted that this was not an isolated case. He pointed out that in several previous instances, requests forwarded for advanced medical assistance on behalf of patients from Tripura and other regions have received compassionate consideration from the Prime Minister. According to him, such decisions reflect the central government’s commitment to supporting vulnerable patients through institutional mechanisms like the PMNRF.
Healthcare experts note that access to national-level relief funds can be a critical lifeline for families dealing with rare or chronic diseases. Political representatives often play an important role in bridging the gap between affected citizens and administrative institutions, especially in cases involving children and high-cost medical treatment.

The case once again draws attention to the importance of responsive governance, coordinated efforts, and accessible relief mechanisms in strengthening India’s public health support system.
