Assam CM Sarma inspects the proposed thermal power plant site in Dhubri and medical college project in Goalpara. These projects aim to boost Assam’s energy capacity and healthcare infrastructure, aligning with the state’s development goals under the 2035 self-sufficiency vision.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, along with Power Minister Prasanta Phukan, visited the proposed site for a thermal power plant at Chirakuta Charuwa Bakra in Bilasipara Co-District of Dhubri district on Thursday. The inspection was aimed at assessing the feasibility of the large-scale project, which is part of the state’s broader strategy to achieve energy self-sufficiency by 2035.

The proposed thermal power plant site, located around eight kilometres from Bilasipara railway station, spans an extensive 3,300 bighas, 2 kathas, and 15 lechas of land. Accompanied by Dhubri District Commissioner Dibakar Nath and senior government officials, the Chief Minister reviewed on-ground conditions and instructed officials to initiate necessary developmental work to prepare the site for project implementation.

During the visit, CM Sarma emphasized the need to construct approach roads and ensure the availability of basic infrastructure to facilitate the establishment of the power plant. Addressing public concerns over land acquisition, Sarma assured that any families affected by the project would be relocated and provided with alternative land as part of the government’s rehabilitation plan.

This initiative is part of Assam’s long-term goal to boost thermal power generation capacity to 5,000 MW by 2035. To support this vision, the Assam government has launched the Assam Thermal Power Generation Product Promotion Policy 2025, which has already attracted investment proposals worth ₹7,730 crore (Rs 77.3 billion). The Assam Power Distribution Company Ltd. has been designated as the nodal agency to execute this policy, with a single-window clearance system to streamline project approvals.

In a related development, CM Sarma also visited Goalpara district to review progress on other critical infrastructure projects, including the proposed medical college and hospital and the Energy Park. At Bhandara village under the Balijana Revenue Circle, he examined the designated site for the new medical college and held discussions with officials about the connectivity and development plans.

Sarma directed that construction of the Goalpara Medical College and Hospital, as announced in the state budget, should begin within the current financial year. The project is a part of the Assam government’s broader initiative to establish a medical college in every district, aiming to enhance access to quality healthcare across the state.

Speaking to the media, Sarma reiterated the government’s commitment to development, stressing the importance of timely execution of these ambitious projects to transform Assam’s infrastructure landscape and improve the quality of life for its residents.
