Assam Chief Minister criticizes West Bengal leadership over governance focus, highlights delimitation benefits for eastern states, and addresses political controversies on food habits and election processes amid rising tensions between rival parties.

Political tensions sharpened on Thursday as Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma intensified his criticism of West Bengal’s leadership during a public address in Coochbehar, raising concerns over governance priorities while also highlighting potential gains for eastern states in the ongoing delimitation debate.

Speaking at a rally, the Assam leader accused his West Bengal counterpart of focusing excessively on political attacks rather than administrative performance. He argued that repeated references to national leaders in public speeches reflect a strategy centered on confrontation instead of development. According to him, such rhetoric risks diverting attention from key governance issues that directly impact citizens.

The Chief Minister further alleged that an atmosphere of fear is being cultivated through these speeches, suggesting that public discourse should instead revolve around infrastructure, welfare programs, and economic growth. He emphasized that political leadership carries the responsibility of addressing everyday challenges faced by people rather than engaging in persistent criticism of opponents.

A major highlight of his address was the discussion on delimitation, an issue that has been gaining traction in recent political conversations. He asserted that eastern states, including Assam, Odisha, Bihar, and West Bengal, could benefit significantly if the delimitation exercise is implemented. By recalibrating parliamentary constituencies based on population changes, these states may see an increase in their representation at the national level.

He described delimitation as a mechanism that could correct regional imbalances in political representation, particularly favoring areas with growing populations. This, he suggested, would ensure a more equitable distribution of seats and strengthen the democratic process by aligning representation more closely with demographic realities.

The Assam leader also addressed recent remarks related to dietary practices, dismissing attempts to politicize food habits. He pointed out that non-vegetarian consumption is widespread across multiple states and communities, arguing that such personal choices should not become subjects of political contention. He cautioned against creating unnecessary divisions over cultural and lifestyle preferences, stressing that governance should remain focused on inclusive development.

In response to allegations concerning the functioning of the election authority, he rejected claims of bias, stating that administrative processes like the transfer of officials are routine and should not be misinterpreted. He maintained that such actions are standard across states and do not warrant political controversy.

These remarks come at a time when exchanges between leaders from rival political parties are becoming increasingly intense. Issues related to governance, electoral processes, and representation continue to dominate the political narrative, particularly in regions where electoral competition is strong.

The developments indicate a deepening of political rivalries ahead of future elections, with both sides attempting to shape public opinion through sharp rhetoric and policy arguments. As debates over delimitation and governance continue, the spotlight remains firmly on how leaders address both political differences and developmental priorities.
