Mumbai witnessed an outpouring of grief and reverence as the nation bid a final farewell to iconic playback singer Asha Bhosle, whose passing marks the end of a golden era in Indian music. The legendary artist was cremated with full state honours at Shivaji Park on Monday, drawing an extraordinary gathering of celebrities, political leaders, and admirers.
Among those present were Bollywood superstars Aamir Khan and Vicky Kaushal, alongside acclaimed actors Tabu and Vivek Oberoi. Music composer Anu Malik and renowned singers Anup Jalota, Sudesh Bhosale, and Shaan were also seen paying their respects to the departed legend.
In a deeply emotional moment, Shaan and Sudesh Bhosale performed the timeless classic “Abhi Na Jao Chhodkar”, a song forever associated with Asha Bhosle’s illustrious career. Their live tribute moved the gathering, capturing the profound impact of her voice across generations.
The funeral ceremony also saw the presence of prominent political figures, including Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, and Maharashtra Legislative Council member Uddhav Thackeray. Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray was also present, highlighting the singer’s influence beyond the entertainment industry.
Earlier in the day, Asha Bhosle was accorded a ceremonial guard of honour at her residence in Lower Parel. Her mortal remains were draped in the Indian tricolour and transported to the crematorium in Dadar, reflecting the nation’s recognition of her unparalleled contribution to music.
Veteran actress Helen paid her final respects and offered condolences to the grieving family. Actress Poonam Dhillon was visibly emotional, breaking down as she bid goodbye to the legendary singer. The grief extended to Asha Bhosle’s family, with her granddaughter Zanai Bhosle seen in tears while interacting with visitors.
The global music community also mourned her loss. During her Unstoppable World Tour concert in London, National Award-winning playback singer Shreya Ghoshal paid homage by performing some of Asha Bhosle’s most cherished songs, including “Abhi Na Jao Chhod Kar” and “Do Lafzon Ki Hai Dil Ki Kahani”, reminding audiences worldwide of the legend’s enduring legacy.
Asha Bhosle passed away on Sunday after being admitted to Breach Candy Hospital. Over a career spanning decades, she became one of the most versatile and celebrated voices in Indian music. Her achievements include the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008.
