Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) has accelerated the restoration of the historic Prabhu Bari Pond under its city beautification drive. Mayor Dipak Majumder inspected the renovation work, directed officials to ensure timely completion, and reaffirmed AMC’s commitment to preserving Agartala’s heritage and improving the urban environment.
The Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) has intensified its efforts to restore and beautify the historic Prabhu Bari Pond as part of its ongoing mission to make the capital city cleaner, greener, and more environment-friendly. The initiative reflects the civic body’s broader commitment to reviving abandoned and neglected ponds across the city while preserving Agartala’s cultural and ecological heritage.
On Tuesday, AMC Mayor and MLA Dipak Majumder visited the Prabhu Bari Pond in Madhyapara to inspect the progress of the ongoing renovation work. During the inspection, the Mayor reviewed the quality of construction, assessed the pace of development, and interacted with engineers, contractors, and municipal officials overseeing the project.
Expressing dissatisfaction over the slow progress of the work, Majumder directed the concerned contractors, engineers, and senior officials of the Agartala Municipal Corporation to ensure that the restoration project is completed within the stipulated timeframe. He stressed that delays would not be tolerated and instructed all agencies involved to expedite the remaining work without compromising on quality.
The Mayor said that the restoration of old and abandoned ponds forms a key component of AMC’s long-term urban development strategy. Several ponds across Agartala have remained neglected for years, gradually turning into garbage dumping sites and posing environmental as well as public health concerns. Through systematic restoration, the corporation aims to transform these water bodies into clean, attractive, and functional public spaces.
Officials associated with the project informed the Mayor that the renovation plan includes desilting and cleaning the pond, strengthening its embankments, repairing damaged structures, improving drainage facilities, and carrying out landscaping and beautification works around the site. The project also seeks to enhance the pond’s ecological value while creating a pleasant recreational environment for local residents.
During the inspection, Ward No. 20 Corporator Ratna Dutta, senior AMC officials, engineers, contractors, and other local representatives accompanied the Mayor. The officials assured him that the work would be accelerated and completed within the prescribed schedule.
Mayor Majumder reiterated that preserving Agartala’s traditional ponds is among the corporation’s highest priorities, as these water bodies are closely linked to the city’s history, culture, and community life. He said that alongside improving urban infrastructure, AMC remains committed to conserving heritage assets that define Agartala’s identity.
