Tripura Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury inaugurated a Motor Vehicles Act workshop in Agartala, highlighting ₹160 crore transport revenue, a 13% reduction in road accidents, enhanced road safety initiatives, and the government’s commitment to strengthening transport governance through capacity building and coordinated enforcement.

Reaffirming the Tripura government’s commitment to road safety, efficient transport governance, and citizen-centric public services, Transport and Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury on Tuesday inaugurated a two-day Sensitization Workshop on the Motor Vehicles Act and Associated Rules at Pragna Bhawan in Agartala. The workshop was organised for officials of the Transport Department and personnel of the Tripura Police with the objective of strengthening institutional capacity, improving understanding of transport laws, and enhancing coordination among implementing agencies.

Addressing the inaugural session, the Minister said that effective enforcement of the Motor Vehicles Act, coupled with regular capacity-building initiatives, is essential for creating safer roads and a more accountable transport administration. He stated that the workshop would equip officials with updated legal knowledge and practical insights to ensure better implementation of traffic regulations across the state.

Highlighting the achievements of the Transport Department, Chowdhury announced that the department has generated ₹160 crore in revenue while simultaneously achieving a 13 percent reduction in road accidents over the past five years. He attributed this improvement to sustained cooperation between the Transport Department and the Tripura Police, along with stricter enforcement of traffic rules, increased public awareness campaigns, and continuous monitoring of road safety measures.

The Minister stressed that road safety is a shared responsibility involving government agencies, law enforcement authorities, and citizens alike. He called upon officials to remain committed to enforcing traffic laws fairly and effectively while encouraging the public to adopt responsible driving practices.

Referring to key national road safety initiatives, Chowdhury highlighted the Rahavir Scheme, which encourages citizens to assist accident victims by ensuring they can take injured persons to hospitals without fear of legal complications or police harassment. He also spoke about the PM Rahat cashless treatment scheme, under which road accident victims are eligible for medical treatment worth up to ₹1.5 lakh. According to the Minister, nearly 60 people in Tripura have already benefited from the scheme.

To further strengthen emergency response mechanisms, the government has deployed 16 modern ambulances and interceptor vehicles across the state. These resources, the Minister said, have significantly improved emergency medical assistance and traffic enforcement capabilities. He also urged officials to ensure strict compliance with recent Supreme Court directives relating to road safety and traffic management.

Speaking about the purpose of the workshop, Chowdhury said it is designed to build stronger institutional capacity, deepen understanding of the Motor Vehicles Act and its associated rules, and promote better coordination among various departments responsible for implementing transport laws. Such collaborative efforts, he observed, are vital for improving road safety, reducing accidents, and delivering efficient transport services to the public.

The Minister further announced that similar sensitisation programmes would be organised across all districts of Tripura to ensure uniform implementation of transport regulations and continuous professional development of officials.

The inaugural programme was attended by Er Susanta Datta, Head of the School of Logistics, Communication & Waterways, SIPARD; Subrata Choudhury, Additional Secretary of the Transport Department; Sachin Ashok Bodhale, ARTO, Maharashtra; Monchak Ipper, IPS, IGP (Law & Order), Tripura Police; along with senior officials from the Transport Department and Tripura Police. The vote of thanks was delivered by Maytreyee Debnath, Joint Secretary, Department of Transport.
