Eight teachers, including the Assistant Headmaster of Satchand Higher Secondary School in South Tripura, have been served show-cause notices for unauthorized absence and neglect of duty. The district education officer warned of strict disciplinary action after finding unhygienic conditions and poor teaching engagement during a surprise inspection.
In a strong administrative move aimed at ensuring accountability in the education sector, eight teachers — including the Assistant Headmaster (AHM) of Satchand Higher Secondary School in South Tripura district — have been served show-cause notices over unauthorized absence from duty.
The notices, issued by South Tripura District Education Officer (DEO) D.K. Debbarma, follow an inspection that revealed serious lapses in teacher attendance and overall school discipline. The incident occurred on August 7, when multiple teachers were found absent without taking prior leave, while others were reportedly neglecting their teaching responsibilities during school hours.
Assistant Headmaster Among the Defaulters
The Assistant Headmaster, identified as Janatapati Tripura, was among those found absent without any prior intimation or sanctioned leave. According to the DEO’s report, the AHM has a history of remaining absent without obtaining proper leave approval or notifying the competent authority. The repeated nature of such behavior has drawn particular administrative concern, given the leadership position the AHM holds in the institution.
“An Assistant Headmaster is expected to set an example for both staff and students. Repeated unauthorized absences from such a senior figure undermine discipline and affect the functioning of the school,” said an official from the district education office, on condition of anonymity.
Widespread Neglect Observed
On August 7, as many as eight teachers were absent from duty without proper documentation or approved leave. The DEO’s inspection also revealed that several teachers present on campus were not actively engaging in their teaching duties. Instead, they were found sitting idly in the staff room and the ICT (Information and Communication Technology) room during scheduled class hours.
This lack of classroom engagement, combined with absenteeism, raised red flags about the quality of education being imparted to students in the institution.
Unhygienic School Conditions
Beyond attendance-related issues, the inspection uncovered a worrying lack of cleanliness within the school premises. Classrooms, corridors, and other parts of the campus were reportedly in an untidy and unhygienic condition, reflecting poor upkeep and neglect of basic sanitation standards.
Officials noted that a dirty and unmaintained learning environment not only affects the health of students and staff but also diminishes the overall educational experience.
Administrative Warning and Next Steps
In the show-cause notices, DEO D.K. Debbarma has directed all eight teachers to submit their written explanations within two days of receiving the order. Failure to provide a satisfactory explanation within the stipulated time frame will be considered “willful negligence of duty,” leading to disciplinary proceedings without further reference.
Possible disciplinary measures could range from formal warnings and salary deductions to more severe penalties under the service rules governing government school employees.
The DEO has also indicated that similar surprise inspections will be conducted in other schools across the district to ensure compliance with attendance norms and improve the standard of teaching.
Wider Context: Addressing Teacher Accountability in Tripura
The incident at Satchand Higher Secondary School has reignited discussions about teacher accountability and the need for stricter monitoring in government schools across Tripura. While teacher shortages and infrastructure gaps remain persistent challenges in the state, unauthorized absenteeism and neglect of duty exacerbate the problem.
Education experts stress that ensuring teacher presence and active classroom engagement is essential for improving learning outcomes, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas.
Local residents and parents have expressed concern over the matter, calling for the authorities to take strict action to ensure that such negligence is not repeated. “We send our children to school to learn, but if teachers are absent or not teaching, the students suffer,” said a parent from Satchand.

The show-cause notices issued to eight teachers, including the Assistant Headmaster, mark a clear warning from the district administration that dereliction of duty will not be tolerated. As the investigation proceeds, the case is likely to set an example for other schools in the region, reinforcing the message that accountability is a non-negotiable part of the teaching profession.
