Afghanistan floods 2026: 28 dead, 49 injured as heavy rains devastate multiple provinces. Hundreds of homes destroyed, roads damaged, and livestock lost. Authorities issue urgent warnings and relief aid amid worsening climate-linked disasters.

Afghanistan is grappling with a deadly wave of extreme weather, as at least 28 people have lost their lives and 49 others have been injured due to heavy rains, flash floods, and lightning strikes since February 26. The crisis, confirmed by Disaster Preparedness Authority spokesperson Mohammad Yousuf Hamad, has affected a wide stretch of the country, underscoring the growing vulnerability of communities to climate-related disasters.

According to reports, the devastation spans across more than 20 provinces, including Kandahar, Herat, Kabul, Panjshir, and Nangarhar. The widespread destruction reflects the severity of the storms, which have triggered landslides, flash floods, and infrastructure collapse in both urban and rural areas.

Officials revealed that at least 568 homes and 10 shops have been completely destroyed, leaving hundreds of families displaced. Additionally, approximately 93 kilometers of roads have been damaged, disrupting transportation and access to essential services. The agricultural sector has also taken a severe hit, with nearly 244 livestock reported dead—dealing a major blow to rural livelihoods that depend heavily on farming and animal husbandry.

In total, around 1,130 families have been directly affected by the disaster. Emergency response teams have been deployed to the hardest-hit regions, delivering food supplies, temporary shelter, and medical assistance. Hamad emphasized that relief efforts are ongoing, but logistical challenges remain due to damaged roads and difficult terrain.

Authorities have issued urgent safety advisories, urging residents to avoid rivers, flood-prone zones, and unstable areas vulnerable to landslides. The government has also appealed for increased preparedness measures as weather patterns continue to grow more unpredictable.

This recent tragedy follows a series of similar disasters in the country. In January, at least 11 people were killed and three others injured after heavy snowfall and rain struck multiple provinces. Earlier reports indicated that severe weather conditions had impacted areas such as Parwan, Wardak, Jawzjan, and Bamiyan, where homes were damaged and key roads blocked due to snow accumulation.

The pattern of recurring disasters highlights Afghanistan’s fragile infrastructure and limited disaster response capacity. In October last year, flash floods affected over 721 families in Kabul, Laghman, and Kapisa provinces, destroying homes and washing away more than 1,000 acres of agricultural land. Fruit farmers in particular suffered heavy financial losses, worsening economic hardship in already vulnerable communities.

Experts warn that climate change is intensifying the frequency and severity of such extreme weather events in Afghanistan. With limited resources and ongoing socio-economic challenges, the country faces an uphill battle in strengthening resilience against natural disasters.

As relief operations continue, the focus remains on saving lives, restoring connectivity, and supporting affected families. However, long-term solutions, including improved infrastructure and disaster preparedness systems, will be critical to mitigating future risks.
