In a shocking incident a boy died allegedly due to acupuncture treatment that was conducted on him.  It was alleged that one  Sujit Debnath conducted acupuncture on the boy putting him under sacks of sand and bricks for the last few days. After suffering a couple of breathing problems during the last two days, the boy collapsed on Sunday. The ‘Doctor’ is not available for comment.

Debashish Nama (16) of Netajinagar under Bishalgarh received injuries on his legs around eight years ago. Gradually his lower portion of the body became paralyzed. Family members took him to Apollo Hospital where doctors told them that treatment for such paralysis was not available in India.

Debashish was studying at class X and was good in his studies. However, his mother, Sefali Das Nama, a widow could not accept Debashish’s plight and kept on visiting doctors according to suggestions of acquaintances. Ultimately she came in contact with  Sujit Debnath of Noagaon at Kamalpur.

Debnath, after seeing the patient, reportedly told Sefali Das Nama, he would cure Debashish. The doctor charged a fee of Rs 6.08 lakh . During the first visit on September 22 last, Dr Debnath prescribed some medicines for Debashish and advised him to come back after a week. Accordingly, on September 28 last, Debashish along with his mother and a relative went to Kamalpur and met the doctor.

After the doctor started his treatment, the mother of Debashish observed that her son was lying on the ground under sacks of sand and bricks. Shocked, at the sight, she decided to discontinue the treatment.

Meanwhile, a couple of days passed. On Saturday (October 2) night, the boy suffered a breathing problem that recurred on Sunday. On both occasions, he was administered injections. On Sunday on their way back to Bishalgarh, Debashish suffered another bout of breathing problem and other symptoms after they reached Behalabari near Khowai. He was rushed to the Khowai Hospital where doctors announced Debashish as being brought dead.

Attempts to contact  Sujit Debnath proved futile. Sefali Das Nama alleged,r Debnath charged them Rs 38 thousand for the treatment before releasing Debashish. She also said that she would lodge a complaint against the Doctor. Besides, she also demanded a proper investigation relating to the authenticity of the doctor – whether he is a qualified doctor or not.
