In an attempt to improving the quality of life for its citizens, the state government has announced the reintroduction of lentils into the public distribution system. This initiative, geared towards providing essential food products at affordable rates, was revealed during a press conference by the Minister for Food and Civil Supplies, Sushanta Chowdhury.
The minister disclosed that a substantial quantity of 1,300 metric tons of lentils had recently arrived in the state to be distributed through government fair price shops and Anganwadi centers. This step is projected to benefit a wide spectrum of consumers, particularly those falling under the Above Poverty Line (APL) category, who will now have the opportunity to purchase lentils at a reduced cost of Rs 82 per kg, down from the previous Rs 84. Furthermore, Below Poverty Line (BPL) and Antyodaya consumers are also set to gain, with lentils being made available to them at a price of Rs 57 per kg, down from Rs 59, at government fair price shops.
The government’s commitment to ensuring a fair distribution system is underscored by its stringent measures against black marketing. Over the past three months, the food department has been actively conducting raids to combat black marketing in various markets across the state, said the minister.
“The results of these efforts have been fines amounting to over Rs 3 lakh being collected. Notably, 10 shops involved in unauthorized practices have been permanently shut down, and licenses of 5 ration shops have been revoked”.
Chowdhury emphasized the government’s steadfast approach in tackling artificial crises and black market activities. He reassured the public that the state maintains a robust stock of essential commodities, including rice, wheat, sugar, petrol, and diesel, ensuring stability and accessibility for the populace.
The press conference was also attended by Secretary of the Department of Transport UK Chakma, Additional Secretary of Transport Department Subrata Chowdhury, Director of Food Department Nirmal Adhikari, and Additional Director of Food Department Animesh Debbarma..
As the state government takes strides to uplift the common people’s quality of life, the reintroduction of lentils and the rigorous crackdown on black marketing stand as important measures that underscore its commitment to public welfare.
